Do you want to assist Vermonters with work that impacts virtually every person in our state? The Vermont Department of Taxes seeks an organized customer friendly, individual to work in the office at our front window area assisting taxpayers within person questions, reviewing returns, taking phone calls and assisting taxpayers through email. This position will work closely with Vermont Department of Taxes staff, taxpayers, and many other state agencies and towns. This position will support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Requirements

  • Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) AND one (1) year or more of experience with accounting, finance, or business administration.
  • Associate's degree or higher with courses in accounting, finance, business administration, taxation AND two (2) years or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.
  • High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years or more of experience in accounting, auditing, or tax processing related duties.
  • One (1) year or more as a Tax Examiner II.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate challenging topics to individuals with varied backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Providing support to taxpayers through both phone, emails and in person.
  • Reviewing returns for accuracy and correcting mistakes or requesting information.
  • Working collaboratively with other staff to ensure deadlines are met.
