About The Position

This position organizationally is under the Executive Director and Tax Commission of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma. Operational hours are Monday through Friday; 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., or as may be needed to serve the tribal population. The incumbent is responsible to provide overall management and direction to the tax department. The incumbent ensures the department is following the established policies and procedures to keep the Kickapoo Tax Commission in compliance with state and federal regulations for the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma. Keeps abreast of all new taxing rules and regulations. Tasks are as follows, but not limited to: Establish and enforce policies and procedures for the tax department. Regulate the implementation and compliance of all Tribal tax laws. Prepare and submit departmental budget; monitor budget expenditures; analyze staff expenditure requests. Must be able to draft tax codes, track revenue, and collect taxes. Furnish written and verbal reports as required and/or requested to the Kickapoo Tax Commission officers and Business Committee. Provides expertise and direction of rules and regulations, state compacts and laws governing the operation of the department. Reviews and interprets significant data submitted to the Kickapoo Tax Commission. Execute administrative and clerical duties as needed. Perform various job duties during and after work hours and weekends as needed. Attends Tribal Tax trainings when needed. Must have proven, successful professional experience utilizing strong financial background and excellent analytical skills. Must have experience, understanding, and appreciation of a strict regulatory environment. Must be able to guide and develop the regulatory process for the Tribe. The incumbent must be flexible in order to undertake a variety of miscellaneous duties as assigned by the supervisor or team leader. Work Environment Ability to work under pressure and maintain personal composure evaluates situations and act/react appropriately, use tact in dealing with business associates, staff, visitors, and tribal members in difficult situations. Excellent management skills are essential. The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk and hear/listen. There are prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading as well as standing. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance and computer and color vision. Talking and hearing/listening are essential to communicate with tribal members/clients/staff and peers. There are constant deadlines associated with this position. The employee must be able to multi-task, and interact with a wide variety of people at various times and on complicated and diverse issues. Requirements

  • Must have proven, successful professional experience utilizing strong financial background and excellent analytical skills.
  • Must have experience, understanding, and appreciation of a strict regulatory environment.
  • Must be able to guide and develop the regulatory process for the Tribe.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college in accounting or a related field, preferred.
  • Two (2) year previous experience in a tribal tax/tag office.
  • Ability to do the work of the position with or without direct supervision.
  • Must have excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
  • Previous Department Director/supervisory skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Indian community, its organization, and needs.
  • Must accept confidentiality as a strict condition of employment.
  • Able to pass both State and Federal background checks and drug/alcohol test.
  • Must be proficient in operating various computer-based programs (i.e., MS Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing at various levels of interaction ranging from individuals, community based organizations to government entities.
  • Ability to do the work of the position without supervision.
  • Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • With ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a related field, at least five (5) years of work experience in a tribal tax office and a supervisory position or any relevant combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the required knowledge, abilities, and skills listed in this job description.
  • Knowledge of the Kickapoo language is preferred but not required.
