This position is responsible for the following: Preparation of U.S. and Canadian payroll tax returns, including payroll tax accruals, and the resolution of audits, appeals, and protests. The individual will also be responsible for unclaimed property reports, payments, and potential refunds, including the identification of potential tax savings opportunities and other projects as assigned. This position is also responsible for research and analysis in the areas of payroll and unclaimed property, as well as the more challenging projects as they arise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent education.
  • 1 - 2 years of payroll tax and related experience with a major corporation or accounting firm.
  • Experience analyzing tax expense and accounting for large corporations.
  • The ability to negotiate effectively is essential.
  • General experience Microsoft Office, SAP, PTMS, or similar products is also required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the rail industry is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of U.S. and Canadian payroll tax returns, including payroll tax accruals, and the resolution of audits, appeals, and protests.
  • Responsible for unclaimed property reports, payments, and potential refunds, including the identification of potential tax savings opportunities and other projects as assigned.
  • Responsible for research and analysis in the areas of payroll and unclaimed property, as well as the more challenging projects as they arise.
  • Preparation of all U.S. and Canadian payroll taxes for GATX Corp., and GATX Rail Locomotive.
  • Stay current with and implement U.S. and Canadian tax law for compliance purposes.
  • Assure consistency and clarity of presentation in the tax returns.
  • Interact with the business units as well as independent auditors, assessors, contract appraisers, outside counsel and the governmental agencies of Canada.
  • Perform independent research on payroll tax issues, developing positions and recommendations.
  • All U.S. and Canadian payroll tax returns for GATX Corporation and its subsidiaries, assuring accurate and timely compliance at minimum expense.
  • Research and analyze changes to the applicable tax laws.
  • Information retrieved from MasterTax is analyzed and reported on the tax return.
  • Federal and State unemployment insurance Volume is weekly, semi-monthly salaried and 2 bi-weekly
  • Interface with payroll to determine amounts for general ledger accounts
  • Interface with treasury to make on-line payments
  • Federal and State payroll taxes for Stock options
  • Plan for ways to minimize payroll, property taxes, identify tax saving opportunities; review state and local tax legislation.
  • Perform tax research and prepare tax memoranda in connection with such planning
  • Represent GATX Corporation in payroll, property tax audits, appeals, and protests.
  • Prepare tax schedules, memoranda, protests and other tax projects as assigned.

  • Assist Senior Manager with legal explanations of positions reported on tax returns
  • Unclaimed Property tax reports and payments
  • File Unclaimed Property tax reports and make required payments
  • Converse with outside consultants regarding documentation
  • Review state websites for potential refund claims
