Buckeye Partners is currently seeking a Manager, Indirect Tax with related experience including management of a company’s sales tax function and delivering quality tax services to support the tax department in identifying and mitigating tax risks, in compliance with laws and regulations in the Oil & Gas Industry to join our team! Role Summary: The primary emphasis of this position is to manage certain aspects of the Indirect tax function which include but are not limited to State Sales tax compliance and audits, tax planning, tax research and analysis, for Federal and State indirect tax on motor fuels, sales and use tax on motor fuels, resulting from refined petroleum product, terminal, pipeline, and marketing activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or other related discipline required.
  • 8+ years of experience in indirect tax related to refined pipelines and terminals, public accounting and/or oil and gas related industry with substantial sales and use tax experience is required.
  • Management or supervisory experience, or large project coordination, is a plus.
  • Experience managing sales tax audits and notices is required.
  • Experience in multi-state tax compliance is required.
  • Experience with research and compliance software is required.
  • Experience with JD Edwards or a similar financial system is a plus.
  • Must possess strong accounting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are also required.
  • This is a position that requires a great deal of accuracy.
  • Strict deadlines and timelines must be adhered to with regards to reporting requirements.
  • Incumbents must be able to multitask and prioritize work responsibilities.
  • One must be available to work overtime when necessary.
  • This position requires the ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and or/quantitative productivity standards.
  • This role requires the ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

Nice To Haves

  • MBA or Master’s Degree in Tax preferred
  • MBA is a plus
  • CPA or CMI preferred but not required.
  • Advanced knowledge of motor fuels is a plus.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is a plus.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Manage federal, state and indirect tax filings, audits and responses to notices.
  • Manage and oversee account reconciliation process of tax balance sheet accounts and ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal controls.
  • Perform necessary research for tax planning pertinent to sales and use taxes; drive and analyze acquisitions, and/or international and domestic business transactions, with respect to sales and use taxes.
  • Manage technical aspects of sales and use tax audits, including responding to requests for information, and providing explanations of transactions and data flow.
  • Direct certain activities of indirect tax staff in Manila (for co-sourced work) for the preparation and filing of selected compliance work (e.g., tax returns, payments, licenses and all other pertinent filings).
  • Interface with outside tax and legal advisors on the company’s behalf, as well as Federal and State taxing authorities, as required.
  • Provide advice and guidance to others in the company on current transactions to minimize indirect tax exposure to Buckeye and its customers.
  • Manage tax compliance function so the financial statements are accurately stated; tax liabilities must be properly accrued and tax payments timely made, and proper internal controls, policies and procedures must be established, maintained, and implemented.
  • Perform certain tax research, due diligence and planning activities related to acquisitions, restructurings, implementation of new tax legislation impacting our businesses and other strategic projects.
  • Maintain and/or oversee tax calendar for required compliance and other filings.
  • Identify process improvements to increase efficiencies and ensure best practices.
  • Lead implementation of new software systems, as it relates to indirect taxes.
  • And other duties as assigned.
