The role will be part of the America’s Indirect Tax team, supporting Indirect Tax strategies, execution, and risk management across key business initiatives! The role partners closely with Product, Engineering, Legal, Finance, and Operations to ensure tax-compliant design, scalable systems, and effective go-to-market execution. A successful candidate serves as a trusted thought partner to the business, applies good judgment in ambiguous situations, and takes ownership of outcomes—not just recommendations.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of related indirect tax experience.
  • Hands-on experience with progressively increasing scope and accountability; gained in public accounting (Big Four or similar) and/or an in-house indirect tax function for a multinational company preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with emphasis in Finance, Tax, Information Systems, or Accounting.
  • Deep U.S. sales & use taxes knowledge is required; understanding of marketplace facilitator legislation preferred.
  • Proven track record of managing cross-functional projects with multiple dependencies in a fast-paced environment - from planning through execution.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, including interpretation of proposed legislation and assessment of business impact.
  • Demonstrated success in ability to explain complex tax issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
  • Experience interacting directly with tax authorities.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and risk-mitigation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a get it done attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively across time zones and within matrixed organizations.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Google Suite, and tax research tools required.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree a plus.
  • CMI or CPA certification preferred.
  • Fluent in English – other languages are helpful.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule in an eBay office preferred.
  • Experience with Canada, Mexico, other global VAT (incl. LATAM) regimes a plus.
  • Experience and working knowledge of Vertex O-Series preferred.
  • Experience with Alteryx, other data wrangling tools and SAP.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, NotebookLM, Gemini) to enhance tax research, documentation, or process efficiency, a plus

Responsibilities

  • Manage various cross-functional projects and initiatives impacting indirect tax across the Americas region (U.S., Mexico, Canada, LATAM) while collaborating on global VAT matters as required; research legislative changes, new country registrations, and expansions.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with a variety of eBay teams, including product, engineering, legal, accounting, finance, and customer service.
  • Connect with key stakeholders at all levels on statutory and go-to-market requirements.
  • Analyze complex tax issues and provide tax advice on business initiatives, legislative developments, and other ad hoc matters.
  • Leading indirect tax technology or systems improvement projects through partnerships with product and engineering - including drafting Business Requirements Documents and identification of system changes needed as a result of legislative changes, taxability improvements, and scalable platform improvements to ensure appropriate indirect tax collection and reporting.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for Vertex O-Series, including governance over configuration changes and review/approval of monthly updates.
  • Assist with M&A due diligence and integration as needed.
  • Manage indirect tax audits and interactions with tax authorities, including strategy, responses, and resolution.
  • Design and deliver targeted training for business, product, and operational teams to embed tax awareness and compliance.
  • Develop and maintain tax playbooks, policies, and technical memos that document positions, decisions, and operating procedures.
  • Manage relationships with external advisors, ensuring quality, alignment, and value.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and informal leadership to junior team members and peers.
