About The Position

Genesis Marine is safe, reliable and efficient with the right equipment for the industry's marine transportation needs. We primarily serve refineries and storage terminals along the Gulf Coast, East Coast, Canada, Great Lakes, Intracoastal Canal and western river systems of the United States, including the Red, Ouachita and Mississippi Rivers on which Genesis has significant existing terminals.Genesis Marine owns and operates two fleets, inland and offshore, including approximately 130 vessels. Our state-of-the-art barges coupled with the best liquid cargo mariners make us the safest, most efficient carrier of inland, hot-oil cargoes. Our inland fleet consists of approximately 82 barges and 33 push-boats and our offshore fleet consists of nine boats and nine barges and one ocean going tanker. We have a total design capacity of 2.3 mmbbl for Inland Marine Operations, 0.9 mmbbl for Offshore Marine Operations and 0.3 mmbbl for the M/T American Phoenix (ocean-going tanker).We provide a safe and competitive service, adhering to strict operating procedures which are designed to not only meet, but also exceed customer & regulatory requirements. Tankerman duties vary from vessel to vessel and from watch to watch. The Master sets the watch-standing schedule and posts the duty list for the crew. The Master or his relief must ensure that the Tankerman stands the proper watch and performs the proper duties. These may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Requirements

  • Ability to train on barge transfers including loads and discharges from start to finish
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate knowledge of heater operation, including start up and shut down situations and partlow settings; hose handling, including hook-up, disconnection and proper slinging; re-packing pumps, per barge maintenance report, and barge maintenance.
  • Strong work ethic
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s License and TWIC card
  • Must have current USCG Tankerman Document (PIC-DL) and Tank Barge Fire Fighting

Responsibilities

  • Making up the tow
  • Dropping, spotting and switching barges at docks
  • Assisting the vessel and tow in making locks
  • Standing lookout, or riding the head of the tow as a lookout, and
  • Performing the various tasks necessary to carry out the above, such as making a coupling, operating winches and ratchets and line handling, including splicing and throwing lines.
  • Chipping and painting vessel and tow
  • Repairing of flame screens, cleaning P/V valves, greasing winches, etc., in accordance with the barge checklist distributed by the Barge Maintenance Department
  • Dewatering the barges as necessary
  • Develop a complete knowledge of all heaters
  • Troubleshoot barge problems
  • Develop a complete knowledge of all barges
  • Cleaning the boat
  • Cleaning quarters, including personal quarters
  • Cleaning the wheelhouse and galley
  • Cleaning the heads and companionways
  • Performing other cleaning chores as directed by the Wheelhouse operator on duty, and
  • Cooking when needed.
  • Reporting any hazardous or unsafe condition to the Master and making “on-the-spot” corrections when capable.
  • Completing all training required and participation in Safety Programs
