Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) is one of four Lockheed Martin business areas. We are experiencing growth and seeking a Systems Safety Engineering Sr Manager. This role reports to the Director of Systems Engineering and is responsible for managing the performance and objectives of the Systems Safety Engineering Section. The Systems Safety Engineering Senior Manager leads a multidisciplinary safety engineering team responsible for ensuring that all systems, subsystems, and components meet stringent safety standards throughout the product lifecycle. This role drives safety centric processes, conducts risk assessments, and partners with program, design, and certification stakeholders to deliver safe, reliable, and mission critical solutions. Direct and mentor a team of safety engineers, analysts, and subject matter experts. - Define team objectives, resource plans, and performance metrics aligned with program goals. - Foster a safety first culture, encouraging proactive hazard identification and mitigation. Own the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of safety processes (e.g., Hazard Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis, Safety Assurance Cases). - Ensure compliance with MIL STD 882, DO 178C, DO 254, ARP4754, and relevant civil aviation standards (e.g., DO 178C, CS 25). Lead system level hazard analyses (STPA, FTA, etc.) and quantitative risk assessments. - Prioritize risk reduction actions, track mitigations, and report safety status to senior leadership and external certification bodies. - Partner with system architecture, reliability, and verification teams to embed safety requirements early in the design. - Serve as primary interface with regulatory authorities (FAA, EASA, MIL SPEC) during certification activities. Review safety documentation, test plans, and results for completeness and compliance. - Conduct independent safety assessments and audits; provide corrective action recommendations. Evaluate emerging safety analysis tools and methodologies; introduce best in class practices. - Promote data driven safety metrics and lessons learned integration across programs. Manage all aspects of attracting, retaining, motivating, and developing the department’s employees; negotiates at different levels and across all organizational boundaries for appropriate staffing assignments. Also includes accountability for employee performance management, salary adjustments, promotions, personnel development plans, training, disciplinary actions, and terminations. This role can be based in Grand Prairie, Texas or Orlando, FL with occasional travel to other locations. Relocation is possible for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 12 years of engineering experience, with at least 6 years in safety engineering and 3+ years in a supervisory/managerial role.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Safety Engineer (CSE) or equivalent; familiarity with DO 178C, MIL STD 882, and system safety standards.
  • Proficiency in hazard analysis methods (FTA, FMEA, STPA); safety assurance case development; modeling tools (MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, RAVEN, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high performing engineering teams, manage budgets, and influence cross functional stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication; ability to present complex safety concepts to technical and non technical audiences.
  • Experience with complex aerospace programs (e.g., Sensor or missile systems).
  • Knowledge of reliability engineering and probabilistic risk assessment (PRA).
  • Familiarity with model based systems engineering (MBSE) frameworks.
  • Strong analytical mindset with a focus on root cause analysis.
  • Proactive, detail oriented, and capable of making data driven decisions under pressure.
