About The Position

DEP’s Office of Technology and Information Services (OTIS) is currently recruiting for a Systems Programmer I.This position is responsible for technical support in the design, installation, and operation of Linux server operating systems in an enterprise environment. This position will provide Linux/Middle Tier support for multiple aspects of application infrastructure; including hardware virtualization, maintaining desired server state, and troubleshooting problems. The incumbent must be available to work after normal work hours, weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of command line and scripting languages such as bash, shell scripts, YAML, PowerShell
  • Knowledge of Linux systems
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot distributed systems
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbal and written information
  • Ability to find, understand, and share information relevant to troubleshooting and project research
  • Ability to process information logically and solve problems
  • Ability to provide thoughtful input during team meetings based on experience and research
  • Ability to travel and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work independently, but also ask questions when appropriate
  • Ability to work on call, weekends, and nights, as needed
  • Basic familiarity of Cloud Infrastructure Technologies
  • Basic familiarity of container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Basic familiarity with application programming and database concepts
  • Basic familiarity with networking, DNS, and Active Directory concepts
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to work on call, weekends, and nights as needed

Responsibilities

  • Assist with efforts to design, configure, tune, document and manage the operations of Linux-based operating system servers of the agency.
  • Provide support of system software through diagnosis of problems and implementation of changes to resolve problems and maintain software at the most current level.
  • Oversee the operation of the systems to ensure the data is good and backups are performed correctly.
  • Help the agency continue to improve security practices and maintain best practices.
  • Design, configure, document, and manage monitoring of application infrastructure.
  • Research and offer suggestions on furthering automation of tasks.
  • Demonstrate strong relationship and interpersonal skills in working with program staff and vendor community.
  • Effectively communicate with system management and networking teams to maintain coordinated infrastructure configuration.
  • Support application development and effectively communicate application deployments.
  • Consistently support the department goal of reducing team silos.
  • Employee is expected to identify and meet the needs of customers in order to provide excellent customer service.
  • Employee should be helpful, cooperative, polite, respectful and concerned at all times in the interactions with customers when representing the Department or the State.
  • This position serves as a customer service representative on behalf of this division when interacting with customers through all communication media, as well as when responding to incident/request service desk services.
  • Provide assistance and fully support the efforts of the agency’s Information Technology Strategic Plan.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of established policies, procedures, and directives necessary to accomplish assignments and responsibilities.
  • Contribute to team documentation supporting assigned functions, duties and responsibilities which provide opportunity for knowledge transfer.
  • Must be able to write for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Display consistent progress in learning new skills, technologies, and/or standards.
  • Perform related tasks as requested.
