Genus plc is seeking a Mechanical & Systems Engineering Manager to lead and grow our talented team of engineers developing next-generation flow cytometry instruments at our lab in Windsor, WI. This is a high-impact, hands-on leadership role, ideal for a technically strong and collaborative engineering professional who is passionate about innovation at the intersection of mechanical design, systems engineering, and life sciences. As a “working” manager, you will lead the design, integration, and delivery of the next generation of instruments. You will oversee the mechanical and systems engineering team, ensuring robust design, manufacturability, reliability, and compliance with regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise in complex instrumentation with leadership skills to drive cross-functional collaboration and innovation, as well as professional development of mechanical and system engineers. The successful candidate will work in a culturally diverse, fast-paced environment and can work autonomously and have proven ability to collaborate effectively across functional teams with strong attention to detail. The candidate will also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical concepts to cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Lead and mentor a team of mechanical and systems engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Provide technical direction and prioritize tasks across the mechanical and systems engineering functions to ensure timely delivery of project milestones
  • Support hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development of direct reports
  • Represent Mechanical and Systems engineering in cross-functional project planning and technical reviews
  • Develop and refine complex electro-mechanical assemblies for flow cytometry instrumentation integrating mechanical, optical, fluidic and electronic subsystems
  • Identify external suppliers, develop statements of work requirements, and manage to high quality outputs
  • Define, manage, and maintain systems requirements with traceability to verification, validation, and risk management activities
  • Guide system architecture and interface definitions to ensure reliable, manufacturable designs
  • Lead integration efforts for prototypes and functional systems working closely with other engineering managers and disciplines
  • Drive root cause analysis and implement correct actions on technical challenges across sub-systems
  • Develop and execute verification and validation protocols to support design milestones and regulatory submissions
  • Ensure documentation and design outputs meet internal quality standards and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate closely with software, biology, and production teams to optimize system design
  • A University degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 8 years of industry experience in mechanical and/or systems engineering roles, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership or management position.
  • A minimum of 4 years proven experience with precision mechanical design, opto-mechanical systems, and fluidics
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience designing, prototyping, and testing complex electro-mechanical systems, ideally in medical devices, diagnostics, or life sciences instrumentation
  • Strong background in systems engineering and multi-disciplinary product integration.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) for 3D modeling and detailed design documentation.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience managing requirements traceability and verification workflows.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Systems Engineering
  • Experience in flow cytometry, laboratory automation, optics, or fluidics-based instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering frameworks (e.g., V-model, MBSE) and tools for requirements management.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment (e.g., ISO 13485, FDA QSR).
  • Hands-on experience with statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Minitab) and Design of Experiments (DOE).
