About The Position

The person in this position will provide Design Certification Review (DCR) planning support to the MSFC Systems Design and Verification Branch (EV72) for support to the Space Launch System (SLS) Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) Office element, and to the MSFC Systems Engineering and Integration Division (EV70). The successful candidate shall include planning the activities and processes to ensure all documentation, verification data, and certification packages are mature and compliant with NASA technical standards to support flight certification. The candidate shall provide technical integration with other EUS engineering disciplines, EUS contractors related to DCR planning. The candidate shall implement the use of digital engineering processes and tools for EUS DCR planning. The candidate will assist in the planning in the following key areas of DCR planning: Assist in defining the specific DCR success criteria, entrance/exit criteria, and the "charge to the board" based on NPR guidelines. Create and maintain the DCR schedule, identifying major milestones, data deliveries, and review dates. Manage all open items from previous reviews are addressed. Organize the DCR board meetings, prepare agendas, ensure minutes are recorded, and track action items. Plan the development and organize the EUS DCR Data Package, including the final design specifications, verification results, and safety/reliability analyses. Plan for the final update of the verification and validation matrix to demonstrate that all system requirements have been tested, analyzed, or inspected and meet safety and performance standards. Plan for the compilation of hazard reports reviews, ensuring safety and mission assurance protocols are met. Plan for the compilation of the identification, documentation, and technical justifications for any approved exceptions, deviations, or waivers to requirements. Plan for the compilation of the design documents (drawings, layouts, analysis) review for completeness, maturity, and adherence to relevant flight standards or ground support standards, if applicable. Plan for the review of assessments of technical risks, including software and hardware, and recommend mitigation strategies to be presented at DCR. Plan for the compilation of the documented, tested, and certified subsystem interfaces (e.g., flight to ground, crew to vehicle) if applicable.

Requirements

  • A degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or a BS degree in a related technical discipline from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 20 years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration, launch vehicle definition, functional design, design integration, launch vehicle performance analyses, flight evaluation planning, requirement verification, and/or requirement validation.
  • Ability to function in a self-directed dynamic work environment as an effective team member, willing to assume a leadership role in the EUS systems engineering effort.
  • Experience in developing systems requirements, verification strategies, and verification planning as well as facilitating the successful completion of verification compliance activities.
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering policies and procedures related to verification and experience with using tools/systems to manage verification compliance data.
  • Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to facilitate and execute program systems engineering tasks and resolve systems integration issues.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive-level briefings, excellent oral, written, and customer relation skills, and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Experience with Digital Engineering tools, such as: DOORS Next Generation, Jira, MagicDraw, or similar tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience in effective technical leadership of an engineering team.
  • An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS Element interfaces.
  • Knowledge of launch vehicle programmatic planning processes and experience performing oversight of prime candidate hardware production, test, and certification efforts.
  • Familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with aerospace vehicles and system design.
  • Experience with defining and managing interfaces, interface requirements, and interface verification.
  • Certification in Model Based System Engineering (MBSE), particularly Object Management Group® (OMG)-Certified Systems Modeling Professional™ (OCSMP™) Certification.
