Opportunity Overview We are seeking a highly capable Systems Architect to join our engineering organization. The ideal candidate brings a deep mechanical or electrical engineering background combined with strong systems‑level thinking across hardware, software, control, and electromechanical domains. In this role, you will define and maintain the system architecture for complex test and automation platforms. You will work directly with Marketing, Sales, and Applications teams to ensure system requirements are accurately shaped by customer needs, and you will guide cross‑discipline engineering teams to ensure detailed designs faithfully adhere to the approved architecture. This role offers the opportunity to set the foundation for long‑term platform evolution, with particular emphasis on mechanical structure, motion, thermal design, reliability, and manufacturability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in design, system architecture, or systems engineering for electromechanical platforms.
  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical system design, including structures,  mechanisms, thermal design, tolerance analysis, and reliability engineering.
  • Proven ability to define, decompose, and maintain system‑level requirements across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Experience leading cross‑functional teams through concept development, trade studies, design reviews, and integration cycles.
  • Strong understanding of how mechanical architecture impacts electrical, firmware, control, and software subsystem decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex mechanical and system-level concepts clearly.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with automation systems, robotics, test & measurement platforms, or other complex electromechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of MBSE practices, SysML/UML modeling, or system modeling tools as they relate to mechanical architecture definition.
  • Background in reliability engineering, motion system design, structural analysis, or thermal systems.
  • Familiarity with field‑driven requirements development and pre‑sales technical interaction.
  • Experience developing platform‑based mechanical architectures designed for multi‑generation scalability.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the overall system architecture, with strong emphasis on mechanical subsystem structure, interfaces, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Lead the creation, decomposition, and management of system‑level requirements, ensuring alignment with the needs of Marketing, Sales, and Applications organizations
  • Translate customer use cases and operational needs into clear mechanical, electrical and system-level requirements.
  • Evaluate architectural tradeoffs involving mechanical and electrical performance, structural rigidity, environmental robustness, motion systems, thermal constraints, serviceability, and lifecycle cost.
  • Serve as the cross‑discipline technical lead, with responsibility for ensuring electromechanical designs adhere to the system architecture.
  • Drive interface clarity between mechanical, electrical and software subsystems
  • Champion design standards, modeling approaches, tolerance philosophies
  • Mentor junior engineers
  • Oversee system‑level integration activities with strong attention to mechanical fit, alignment, tolerance stack‑ups, structural dynamics, thermal management, and motion system behavior.
  • Guide teams in performing system‑level analyses (FEA, thermal simulations, motion profiles, load paths, vibration and acoustic assessments).
  • Support engineering in root‑cause analysis of system‑level issues
  • Create and maintain system architecture documents, requirements and design verification plans.
  • Clearly communicate architectural decisions, design rationale, and tradeoffs to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Contribute to customer‑facing technical engagement when system design clarity is needed to shape scope or expectations.

Benefits

  • Teradyne offers a variety of robust health and well-being benefit programs, including medical, dental, vision, Flexible Spending Accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance, paid vacation & holidays, tuition assistance programs, and more.
