About The Position

Under the general direction of Data Center Operations (DCO) Service Delivery management, the Systems Administrator performs advanced computer systems administration work. The Systems Administrator supports HHSC technical platforms, tools and services maintained by Data Center Operations (DCO) Service Delivery. The administrator works directly on infrastructure software to make sure services and settings are current, properly patched, and maintained; they maintain ongoing communications with application custodians and owners. The administrator works closely with federal and state auditors to determine requirements and administers remediation of new and legacy DCO supported applications and systems. Ensures modifications are addressed to supported Service Delivery steady state systems and coordinates with application areas and DIR vendors as needed; performs system design to satisfy specific functional and non-functional requirements through report creation, diagrams, schematics and flowcharts. They implement recommendations, remediation and configuration requirements by using system development life cycle (SDLC) methodology; provides support of enterprise-level tools and services hosted on Windows and Linux operating systems, including support of cloud Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) services and other technologies when needed. They assist in organizing and structuring specific requirements mandated by the application, program areas, governing authorities and Data Center Operation management. The Systems Administrator works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment; provides 24/7 support when needed. Selected candidate must work onsite from an HHS office located in Austin, Texas designated by the hiring manager.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of IT ecosystems and HHS enterprise applications, technologies, integrations, implementations, and administration.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience of Microsoft business computer applications
  • Knowledge of computing logic, human-readable (YAML, JSON, XML, etc.) and understanding of command-line interface (Bash, PowerShell, Batch file processing) languages. Understanding of operating system specifications, and software support. Basic knowledge of SQL and database structures.
  • Knowledge of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) security.
  • Knowledge of technical approaches used to deliver IT products, such as waterfall and agile (scrum) methodologies, BMC Helix IT Service Management and Service Now ITSM.
  • Skill in written and verbal communications with a high level of effectiveness.
  • Ability to think and act strategically and proactively. Technical and critical analysis, and decision making.
  • The ability to work with a significant degree of independence to deliver work within defined schedules, cost and quality.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple assignments/projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lead the creation of best practices and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • One (1) or more years of experience administrating and supporting IT solutions with a background in analytical IT business, cloud, data, application, network, or security technologies is required.
  • One (1) or more years of customer service experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Agile and ITIL frameworks is preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in computer science, management information systems, or a related field is preferred. Full-time work experience administrating and supporting IT solutions with a background in analytical IT business, cloud, data, application, network, or security technologies may be substituted year-for-year.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Service Delivery system administration such as installation, configuration, maintenance, tagging and security of hosted DCO Service Delivery Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Windows and Linux servers, systems and other cloud services.
  • Evaluates, coordinates, and assists with federal and state audits in preparation and remediation of technical findings and recommendations associated with the application area, program, governing authorities and/or Data Center Operation Management. The Systems Administrator works closely with DCO Service Delivery team members, management, and other HHS departmental areas that involve cross-functional agency coordination to ensure HHS best practices and DIR standards are followed.
  • This position is responsible for supporting the Service Delivery team and its customers in creating and troubleshooting credentials, interpreting technical requests, addressing ITSM ticketing, and alleviating technical roadblocks with supported systems.
  • Participates in accurately evaluating, tracking and inventorying IT services for waste, unnecessary redundancy within the supported infrastructure, and cloud sprawl by leveraging schematics, metrics reports and flowcharts. Helps address quality assurance for DCO Service Delivery by assisting in daily, monthly, and quarterly checks.
  • Other duties assigned include but are not limited to actively participating in Data Center Operations efforts such as policy and procedure review and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations.
