About The Position

Commonwealth is seeking an Entry-Level System Studies Engineer to join its System Studies team. This role is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals with a background in electrical engineering, specifically with a focus on power systems. The position involves supporting the planning and execution of power system studies, including stability, power flow, contingency, and transient analyses under the guidance of senior engineers. The engineer will assist with ISO model building, data management, and the preparation of key engineering deliverables such as reports, calculations, and drawings. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop foundational skills in power system engineering while contributing to impactful energy projects at Commonwealth.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of departmental design guides, industry standards, and relevant engineering codes.
  • Interest in power system protection, relay settings, and advanced analysis topics such as harmonics, grounding, black start, and voltage recovery.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • PSS/E, PSS/E TS, TARA, PSLF, Milsoft PSCAD, EMTP-RV
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with a focus on power systems (Master’s degree or current graduate studies preferred).
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience in power system studies or related fields (internship or co-op experience is a plus).
  • Familiarity with industry-standard software such as PSS/E, PSCAD, PSLF, Milsoft, or similar tools.
  • Basic understanding of power system analysis, including dynamic stability, power flow, contingency analysis, and transient voltage assessments.
  • Exposure to power system protection and relay settings development a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in performing power system studies, including stability, power flow, contingency, and transient analyses under supervision.
  • Support ISO model building in PSS/E and PSCAD as directed by senior engineers.
  • Help collect, assimilate, and manage engineering data for project tasks.
  • Contribute to engineering deliverables such as reports, calculations, and drawings following established design guides and standards.
  • Participate in internal project meetings and coordinate with other engineering disciplines for assigned tasks.
  • Interact with clients for data collection, site visits, and clarification of technical issues as appropriate for entry-level responsibilities.
  • Assist with research and provide recommendations for equipment or material selection with guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Support the preparation of project documentation, including scope of work, schedules, and budgets for assigned tasks.
  • Contribute to contract administration or project management administrative activities as required.
