About The Position

Under the direction of a Registered Surveyor, supervises office staff, crew chiefs, and/or survey field crews engaged in surveying and mapping activities. Creates and updates databases, maintains survey field notes and records, computes and sets monuments as needed; and prepares section corner certification documentation. Position ensures work meets the requirements of Chapter 472 of the Florida Statutes, Land Surveying and Mapping, and the Standards of Practice in Chapter 5J-17 of the Florida Administrative Code. This is a "mandatory testing" position that requires drug testing.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), and eight (8) years of specific land surveying experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and/or working experience and three (3) years in a supervisory role in the surveying field.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence.
  • relevant statutes and codes of the State of Florida governing the practice of Surveying and Mapping (Chapter 472 of the Florida Statutes and Chapter 5J-17 of the Florida Administrative Code)
  • manual of Instructions for the Survey of the Public Land of the United States
  • modern survey work principles and practice and an understanding of historical survey practice and methodology
  • geographic Coordinated Systems and the State Plane Coordinate System
  • operation, adjustment, maintenance, and care of all instruments including: GPS receivers, transits, theodolites, electronic data collectors, automatic levels, electronic distance measurers, and laser levels
  • stakeout calculations and field stakeout procedures
  • basic first aid and safety requirements of field work
  • conventional and GPS equipment and practices, and an understanding of drafting, CAD, and Global Positioning System (GPS) technology
  • Carlson, Topcon, Leica, Trimble, or equivalent surveying software and their computer applications
  • report and record maintenance principles and procedures
  • principles of budget development, evaluation, adherence, and project cost projection
  • inventory control principles and practices
  • effective supervisory principles and practices
  • research methods and techniques
  • written, verbal, electronic, and visual communications for effective expression and clarity
  • operation of various computer or other electronic devices, printers, plotters, scanners, drafting equipment, and search engines

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and assigns work/projects to office staff, crew chiefs, and/or survey field crews engaged in surveying and mapping activities
  • Performs County-wide GPS observations
  • Performs data collection, including database and AutoCAD drawing creation
  • Performs data collection with robotic total station and vertical control densification
  • Calculates, solves, and prepares boundary surveys from field notes and recorded plats
  • Prepares and verifies legal descriptions for boundary surveys and certified corner record documentation
  • Maintains survey records, reports and files as required by Florida statutes and departmental policies
  • Prepares and verifies base maps for engineering design purposes
  • Records survey notes legibly and efficiently in the accepted format
  • Provides computational support to field crews
  • Provides computations and quality control for the GIS base map
  • Designs and creates databases, drawings, forms, and spreadsheets as needed
  • Consults with public and private engineers, inspectors, and contractors as needed on assigned projects/functions
  • Reviews and prepares reports from completed work of survey field crews and office technical staff
  • Establishes new procedures and methods that improve efficiency and productivity of the survey section
  • Assists the public and County personnel with survey related questions
  • Aids in occupational and professional training and development of survey personnel
  • Properly care for precision surveying instruments and other equipment or vehicles related to assigned tasks
  • Participates in research, data compilation, and assimilation into various reports and studies concerning assigned functional area as directed
  • Uses online governmental programs from the National Geodetic Survey (such as OPUS, NAVCON, GEOCON, and VERTCON)
  • Maintains inventory control for the Survey Division
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of assigned tasks
  • Performs other related duties as required
