About The Position

Glens Falls Hospital is seeking detail oriented Surgical Technologists to join their Operating Room team. This opportunity will allow you to refine your surgical technologist skills while working closely with surgeons, registered nurses, and other professionals on the OR team. The Surgical Technologist role is essential for ensuring a sterile and efficient environment and procedure. The Surgical Technologist assists nursing staff with patient care in the surgical suite within the limits described in their job description, always working under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate, or equivalent, with proof of previous experience as a Surgical Technologist—a cumulative period of two years.
  • Graduated from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization, or
  • Recent graduate from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists, and in the process of obtaining his or her certified surgical technologist credentials
  • Completed a military surgical technology program
  • Maintains current knowledge related to the age and development of the patient population in areas in which they work
  • BLS Certification required
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with other patient care staff, patients and physicians.
  • Ability to work effectively with other nursing staff, patients, physicians, and members of other departments under the direction of an RN.
  • Ability to recognize patient care problems, react appropriately in patient care emergencies and communicate pertinent information to the responsible RN.
  • Ability to complete basic mathematical calculation.
  • Dependable, alert and adaptable to change in situations.
  • Exercises safe judgment in decision making.

Responsibilities

  • Creates and maintains a sterile field
  • Applies the principles of surgical asepsis in a knowledgeable manner in varying situations
  • Utilizes Universal Precautions at all times
  • Assists in opening the sterile supplies in preparation for the surgical case.
  • Provides equipment and supplies based on patient needs
  • Assists in assuring that surgeon preferences are accessible and current; assists the RN in selecting equipment and supplies.
  • Assures all equipment is functioning before use, removing any malfunctioning equipment from OR per hospital policy.
  • Operates mechanical, electrical and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Communicates administration of drugs and solutions to the surgeon and circulating RN when scrubbed.
  • Assists in assuring that emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times.
  • Assists in assuring that OR’s are properly prepared for daily schedule.
  • Handling and counting sponges, sharps and instruments.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for counts.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for handling and disposal of reusable and disposable sharps.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for handling and disposing of one time use products.
  • Follows established policies and procedures for the care and handling of reusable equipment and instrumentation.
  • Monitors and controls the environment
  • Regulates temperatures and humidity as indicated.
  • Adheres to electrical safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintains traffic patterns; monitors sensory environment
  • Adheres to surgical suite infection control and housekeeping policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the ordering, care, preparation and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment.
  • Handles soiled instruments and equipment properly.
  • Cleans special instruments and equipment according to established procedures.
  • Handles and stores sterile/unsterile supplies using established principles of aseptic technique.
  • Reacts appropriately in patient care emergencies.
  • Assists RN in updating physician preference cards.
  • Cares for specimens and cultures as dictated by policy and procedure.
  • Assists in orientation of new Surgical Technologists under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • On call for emergencies and available for additional duty if necessary.
  • Transports and assists the surgical team with positioning of patients; transports patients according to established policies and procedures.
  • Uses proper body mechanics in transferring and positioning patients
  • Performs other duties as requested within the scope of this job description.
  • Utilizes computer information systems according to established standards for position and unit
