The Surgical Technologist Level II (STII) assists in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients and functions as a member of the sterile team. Responsibilities include donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and issuing instruments to surgeons. The STII provides intra-operative care in a fast-paced environment focused on patient progression, quality initiatives, and high patient satisfaction. The STII also precepts staff and students, participates in committees, and collaborates with service leaders to update clinical resources. This role functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Surgical Technology
  • Current CPR certification
  • Surgical Technologist certification
  • Minimum of 2 years of surgical technologist experience
  • Must work a minimum of 24 hours per week

Responsibilities

  • Assists RN in preparing the surgical suite, including equipment placement and opening sterile supplies.
  • Picks instruments and supplies per procedure requirements.
  • Creates and maintains a sterile field using aseptic techniques.
  • Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts per policy.
  • Initiates corrective action for breaks in sterile technique.
  • Operates equipment per manufacturer instructions.
  • Demonstrates dexterity with instruments and communicates effectively.
  • Acts as a preceptor for new staff and students.
  • Assists in transporting, positioning, and restraining patients.
  • Maintains proper alignment and uses good body mechanics.
  • Cleans and prepares the OR between cases and at day's end.
  • Disposes of linen, debris, and sharps properly.
  • Cleans instruments and restocks supplies.
  • Tests equipment for operational efficiency.
  • Collaborates with service leaders to update preference cards.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
