Under the general direction of the Director of Cardiology Services, the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer performs diagnostic echocardiograms for subsequent interpretation by a Cardiologist.

Requirements

  • 1 year of formal training or equivalent experience with equipment
  • Current CPR certification
  • 2–3 years of dedicated cardiac experience (excluding training)

Responsibilities

  • Performs M-mode, 2D, and color/Doppler exams according to ARDMS protocol.
  • Utilizes multiple patient positions and equipment settings for optimal imaging.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology.
  • Obtains complete clinical history from patient and/or chart.
  • Writes preliminary technical interpretation of echo results.
  • Captures diagnostic-quality digital loops for cardiologist review.
  • Prepares patient, room, and equipment for TEE.
  • Assists cardiologist with equipment settings during procedure.
  • Performs post-procedure tasks including disinfection and restocking.
  • Cleans exam tables, probes, and ECG cables daily.
  • Disinfects TEE probes per protocol.
  • Cleans machine filters regularly.
  • Maintains records and tapes of exams and ensures accurate billing.
  • Orders and stocks necessary supplies.
  • Coordinates with other cardiovascular and hospital testing areas.
  • Assists with patient preparation and stress testing.
  • Schedules echo exams in conjunction with other tests.
  • Maintains exam quality records and monthly statistics.
  • Keeps service and repair logs and schedules maintenance.
  • Orients and mentors new sonographers.
  • Maintains continuing education credits.
  • Attends relevant seminars and reads current literature.
  • Reviews echo results with cardiologists.
  • Stores patient images accurately using echo carts.
  • Edits digital loops and demographic data.
  • Performs regular DVD backups of patient images and reports.
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development stages to patient care.
  • Communicates appropriately with patients of all ages.
  • Provides age-appropriate care and support.
