About The Position

Surgical Technologist-First Assistants are responsible for performing at a competent level of technologist practice and according to the standards of practice for the area. Performs patient care and service through a multidisciplinary team approach. Provides assistance in emergency procedures as well as elective and scheduled cases. Functions to maintain an environment of caring and concern for patients and staff members according to principles of patient focused care and customer service.

  • CFA - Certified Surgical First Assistant - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
  • CST-Certified Surgical Technologist - Sarah Bush Lincoln

Responsibilities

  • Applies principles of disinfection and sterilization.
  • Assists in the positioning, skin preparation, and draping of the patient.
  • Assists with clean up and case turnover.
  • Assumes accountability for verification of operative procedure being performed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic aseptic techniques.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient identification.
  • Handles, identifies, and delivers all specimens, cultures, implantable devices, and homografts.
  • Operates and maintains equipment according to recommended manufacturers instructions and policies and procedures.
  • Operates flash sterilizer and Steris sterilizer.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the patient care delivery system.
  • Performs first assisting duties according to standards of practice as assigned. Participates in the development and maintenance of competencies necessary to function in the first assistant role.
  • Performs scrub duties as assigned to maintain clinical skills.
  • Provides hemostasis, wound exposure, handles and cuts tissue appropriately to reduce the potential for injury, sutures tissues, and applies dressings to the wound under the direction of the surgeon. Uses surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose.
  • Scrubs all operative procedures performed.
  • Seeks assistance when situation is beyond the ORT/LPN’s knowledge and experience.
  • Takes call as scheduled.
  • Uses basic communication skills to obtain and provide pertinent patient care information to other team members, establish professional rapport with other team members and surgeons, maintain patient/family confidentiality, achieve desired outcomes, and serve as the patient advocate.
  • Utilizes surgeon preference card and case cart pick list to competently prepare for operative procedures.
