About The Position

Under the direction of the clinical manager, and supervision of the surgeon, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel, a surgical technologist, also known as surgical tech or operating room technician, is a crucial member of the surgical team. Their primary role involves preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and other equipment. This position assists surgeons during the procedures by passing instruments, holding retractors, and managing surgical supplies. Surgical techs must maintain a sterile environment to prevent infections. This role must have a thorough knowledge of surgical procedures and aseptic techniques. The scope of their responsibility can vary depending on the complexity of surgeries performed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical Diploma in Surgical Technology required.
  • Graduate from an accredited surgical technology program required.
  • BLS/CPR required upon hire or obtain prior to patient care.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, with excellent critical thinking and decision making skills
  • Basic proficiency in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care
  • Adequate verbal and written communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare teams
  • Basic flexibility to adapt to changes in patient conditions and unit priorities
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures
  • Ability to maintain a sterile environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree in Surgical Technology preferred.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist preferred.
  • Extensive experience in a variety of surgical specialties
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and train other staff members
  • 2+ years of experience in perioperative area
  • Active membership in professional organizations such as the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)
  • Proficiency with the latest surgical instruments and technology, including minimally invasive and robotic surgical systems
  • Experience with quality improvement projects and safety initiatives within the surgical department
  • Ability to adapt to new procedures and protocols
