About The Position

The Surgical Technician is responsible for understanding and applying the principles of sterile technique, following defined procedures under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. This role involves maintaining collaborative relationships with nursing staff, physicians, and ancillary staff, and continuously enhancing knowledge and clinical expertise through ongoing education and in-service programs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician School, or LPN with a current license in the state of practice, or completion of a completed and appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United Sates Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps
  • General knowledge of surgical procedures
  • Ability to draw specialized training from working with physician or physicians on the job

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification
  • Experience (may be trained on-the-job if recent graduate)

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competence in performance of technical skills relative to clinical area of practice
  • Utilizes and maintained surgical instruments according to manufacturer’s recommendations and Department guidelines
  • Utilizes positive interpersonal skills in all forms of communication
  • Applies base knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of patient care concepts
  • Applies the principles of sterile technique during surgical procedures
  • Participates in orientation and training program to attain competency in all services
  • Maintains certification by participating in continuing education activities/provides documentation of required continuing education credits
  • Promotes teamwork and collaboration among all members of the surgical team
  • Practices within the scope of current policies and procedures of the nursing Department and nursing unit guidelines
  • Demonstrates effective time management, flexibility and priority setting regarding work assignment
  • Attends and participates in unit council meetings, utilizes staff meetings and other appropriate channels to resolve problems
  • Demonstrates initiative in completing work that needs to be done, within areas of responsibility
  • Recognizes and reports potential problems to the supervisor or nursing manager on the floor
