Harris Regional Hospital is an 86-bed acute care facility, including orthopedics, cardiology, general surgery, women’s care, and emergency medicine, as well as sports medicine, physical therapy, imaging and laboratory services, and many other areas of subspecialty care. Requirements

  • Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within one month of hire;
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; graduation from an accredited surgical technology program preferred. Relevant years of experience may be substituted for required education or certification.
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in a surgical or healthcare setting preferred, with knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterile technique, aseptic practices, and maintenance of the sterile field.
  • Strong understanding of infection prevention, patient safety standards, and accurate instrument, sponge, and sharps counts in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and other members of the healthcare team in routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to remain calm, organized, and adaptable in fast-paced surgical environments while managing case preparation, intraoperative support, and operating room turnover.
  • Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail, with the physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand or walk for extended periods, and safely handle equipment and supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares the operating room by setting up sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment while maintaining strict aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
  • Scrubs on surgical procedures, maintaining the sterile field and anticipating the needs of the surgeon by efficiently passing instruments and sterile supplies.
  • Performs and participates in accurate instrument, sponge, and sharps counts according to patient safety standards and hospital policy.
  • Assists with patient positioning, skin preparation, and sterile draping to support safe surgical procedures.
  • Handles, labels, and prepares surgical specimens properly for laboratory analysis according to established protocols.
  • Collaborates with the Registered Nurse, circulating nurse, anesthesia providers, physicians, and other departments to ensure safe and efficient surgical workflow.
  • Supports operating room turnover by cleaning, restocking supplies, ensuring equipment readiness, and adhering to professional standards including The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements and hospital training.
