Presbyterian is hiring a Surgical Technologist to provide assistance and support to surgeons by preparing and providing instruments and equipment during surgical procedures in the Operating Room. Works under the supervision of the surgeon. Facilitates a safe, effective and orderly operating room to maximize patient safety. Follows approved infection control, quality assurance, and department policies and procedures related to the cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments, trays, packs, and reusable medical devices for all hospital departments and PMG clinics. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Scrub various types of basic surgical procedures: general, OB/gyn, urology, gastroenterology
  • Current BLS required.
  • Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.

Nice To Haves

  • Short-term training in operating room setting preferred.
  • Previous experience with handling of sterile supplies and/or instruments preferred.
  • Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates ability to problem-solve in relation to the procedure being performed; maintains current knowledge of anatomy/physiology, medications used intraoperatively, and various equipment, procedures, and supplies.
  • Adheres to proper surgical procedures, including aseptic technique, standard precautions, sterility assurance, safety in the use of instruments and equipment, and workflow patterns; follows all federal, state, departmental, and Infection Control safety procedures.
  • Ensures preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the OR; performs scrub functions; adheres to proper attire in restricted and semi-restricted areas and proper donning and doffing of PPE with appropriate hand hygiene practices.
  • Secures, identifies, inspects, assembles, and prepares all supplies, instruments, and equipment (including laser, endoscopic, general, and specialty instruments) required for surgical intervention per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Performs instrument counts prior to each procedure and maintains accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments throughout the procedure.
  • Prepares patient skin for surgical treatment; positions and re-positions the patient during surgery; provides supportive care and helps monitor patients during the pre-operative and intraoperative phases.
  • Ensures specimens are correctly handled, labeled, and routed to the proper source.
  • Inspects, cleans, decontaminates, performs high-level disinfection, assembles, sterilizes, and stores instruments, trays, and GI flexible endoscopes; processes instrumentation according to instructions for use and selects and operates specialized cleaning equipment.
  • Selects appropriate methods of sterilization; prepares and selects packing materials according to manufacturer guidelines; properly loads and unloads sterilization carts; verifies sterilization parameters and daily equipment performance testing of washers and sterilizers using indicators.
  • Validates and maintains event-related protocols, disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters, biological monitoring, employee competencies, and accurately documents and maintains daily QA and sterilization records in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Inventories, restocks, and distributes instruments and medical equipment for the Perioperative department, other hospital departments, and PMG Clinics; keeps current with developments in the field through seminars, workshops, and publications.
  • Performs other functions as required.
