About The Position

The Surgical Services Attendant performs a variety of service and direct patient care activities related to the care of patients who are undergoing surgery or other procedures, which support the nursing staff in providing quality healthcare to each patient. Direct patient care activities include the transportation and transfer of patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens to and from designated areas; positioning of patients based on procedural needs, set up and turnover of procedural suites; the cleanliness and upkeep of all transportation equipment; and maintenance of adequate inventory of supplies pertinent to the departmental operation. The role involves interacting with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with Jefferson's values, and participating in daily/weekly equipment checks and coordinating equipment repair. The attendant also participates in the onboarding and training of new staff members, covering topics such as positioning, proper body mechanics, general sterile technique concepts, OR/procedural room cleaning protocols, equipment use and set ups, and room and table set ups for varied surgeons and procedures. This position is integral to supporting the care team in providing quality healthcare.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Working understanding of aseptic technique.
  • Working understanding of various surgical procedures.
  • Working understanding of proper handling of surgical instruments as it relates to room turnover and ensuring instruments are properly transported to appropriate location for sterile processing.
  • Proficient in proper patient positioning.
  • Proficient in procedural set ups.
  • Ability to teach skills required of a surgical service attendant.
  • Proficient in skills of a surgical service attendant.
  • Plans, coordinates, and teaches other surgical service attendants.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support AHA - American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of service and patient care activities that support the care team in providing quality healthcare to each patient.
  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Transports and transfers patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens to and from designated areas.
  • Positions patients based on procedural needs.
  • Sets up and turns over procedural suites.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and upkeep of all transportation equipment.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies pertinent to the departmental operation.
  • Transports specimens to the lab and retrieves blood bank products.
  • Performs equipment set up, including specialty services such as orthopedics.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness, stocking, and upkeep of all Operating/procedural room(s).
  • Responsible for daily supply orders.
  • May participate in daily/weekly equipment checks including, but not limited to, fluid warmers, sterile storage area temp/humidity and eye wash stations.
  • Participates in coordinating equipment repair in collaboration with Biomed team and Vendors.
  • Participates in the onboarding and training of new staff members to the role of surgical service attendant including positioning, proper body mechanics, general sterile technique concepts, OR/procedural room cleaning protocols, equipment use and set ups, room and table set ups for the varied surgeons and procedures.
  • Accepts additional duties with a positive attitude and is supportive of the unit.
