About The Position

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Under the supervision of the OR charge nurse or designee, the surgery support tech assists in planning, organizing, and facilitating the surgery schedule. Other key responsibilities are assisting the PAN (pre-admission nurse with chart preparation in the form of document collection, assisting in transporting, OR room turnover, and functioning as the department receptionist. Excellent customer service skills are essential in this high profile position. Effective 3/1/2010 must be eligible for the North Dakota Board of Nursing Registry. This is a full time - benefited position working 80 hours per pay period. Days of work are Monday - Friday with hours from 8:30am - 5:00pm, no nights, weekends or holidays.

Requirements

  • PREPARATION AND TRAINING: High school level of knowledge preferred. Work requires in addition to skills normally acquired through a high school education, vocational training for a period of six months or less which may be obtained in high school or outside of school. Vocational preparation shall include typing at 50 words per minute, knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft office is required. Work requires level of knowledge in order to follow written and oral instructions, perform simple calculations to deal effectively with other people. Medical terminology is required. Core education preparation should be that of a medical assistant or CNA. Must be eligible for the ND Department of Health Registry or active C.N.A. certification. Position is required to attend Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training in the appropriate timeframe according to department orientation checklist.
  • WORK EXPERIENCE: Position requires previous work experience of six to twelve months in a health care related position such as a Unit Clerk or a receptionist/clerical position in which the individual has demonstrated an aptitude for working with the public. Time to reach competency on the job here: a minimum of six weeks.
  • ATTENDANCE: Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at JRMC. Employee are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees are also expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule.
  • ANALYTICAL ABILITY: Analysis involves accurate comparison, interpretation and copying of numbers, letters, simple math calculations that become part of hospital records. Requires gathering numerical statistics to complete monthly O.R. records.
  • INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Works under the direct supervision of the O.R. Charge Nurse in accordance with established O.R. and nursing policies and procedures; non-routine problems are referred to the Unit Supervisor. Errors in judgment may moderately impact in time, public relations or costs primarily within the O.R. Must be able to establish priorities of duties to be completed.
  • CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Position requires frequent contact with others outside of the department primarily by telephone. Must be able to exchange information on a factual basis, dispatch verbal or written messages as directed on a timely basis and perform other activities which require courtesy and tact. Imperative that this person maintains good working relationships with co workers as well as other individuals who are in contact with the O.R.
  • SUPERVISING THE WORK OF OTHERS : Responsible for own work. Relates closes to coworkers but is not responsible for supervision.
  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WELFARE OF OTHERS: Failure to make timely contacts with other employees or departments may result in delays of confusion to patients or co workers. Responsible for maintaining absolute confidentiality of information.
  • MENTAL/VISUAL EFFORT: Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must demonstrate physical and emotional ability to meet agreed upon work schedule and performance standards required by the position. Work regularly requires the employee to exert a high level of mental/visual effort. Must be emotionally stable under stress. Visual acuity necessary for performing clerical duties. Typing, recording and filing require particular mental application for attention to details and accuracy.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: OSHA job classification: This position is defined as a Category I in which the employee does have exposure to blood borne pathogens. Position requires exposure to patients with infectious disease and odor. Must practice aseptic techniques and observe Standard Precautions. Participates in and complies with JRMC Safety Management program. Position is subject to frequent interruptions. Work may beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
  • PHYSICAL AND SENSORY EFFORT: Majority of position requirements are done within the O.R. office area. Position also requires standing and walking. Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients and/or equipment. Also reaches, stoops, bends, kneels, and crouches. Needs finger dexterity for typing, filing, etc.
  • PROMOTION: No formal line of promotion.

Responsibilities

  • Receives requests for scheduling surgical procedures in the Operating Room.
  • Understands and performs scheduling functions in the Epic Optime module.
  • Answers telephone, takes and communicates messages to the appropriate persons.
  • Performs clerical duties related to surgery schedule updates, update on-call list on core and delivers information to the proper departments as necessary.
  • Performs clerical duties related to typing, photocopying, filing, and weekly staff assignments.
  • Assists with transferring and transporting surgical patients of all ages as requested by the nursing and anesthesia staff.
  • Works with OR charge nurse on plan ahead meeting prep and daily metric recording.
  • Works with PAN Nurse to coordinate documents needed for surgery or procedure. Assists with chart preparation.
  • Assists with patients and visitors of all ages in the nursing unit as needed.
  • Assists in orientation of new staff.
  • Collects and transports specimens to the appropriate departments.
  • Collects linen and disposes of trash to designated areas.
  • Helps with OR room turnovers, cleaning equipment, mopping floors, docking Neptune, collecting trash and linen, and returning contaminated instruments to decontamination area.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
