About The Position

As a Surgical Prep and Recovery Registered Nurse at our Surgery Center, you will be responsible for providing individualized care to patients both before and after surgery. You will assist in all parts of the pre and postoperative periods by preparing supplies for each patient, charting their medical history, administering medications, monitoring vitals, etc. while maintaining a safe and private environment that is in accordance with HIPAA and OAM policies. It will be imperative that you have a kind demeanor and can work well in a fast-paced, team oriented environment.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • BLS certification.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to explain complex medical concepts to patients and family members in a way they will understand.
  • Kind and compassionate demeanor.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle working under pressure well.
  • Ability to act quickly and make smart judgements regarding patient care.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA laws in order to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate modern office and hospital equipment.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, and reaching required.
  • Ability to manually maneuver adult patients.
  • Normal or correctable range of hearing and eyesight.

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ years of experience working as a Registered Nurse.
  • Experience working in surgery prep/PACU.
  • ACLS and PALS certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Select and prepare appropriate supplies for the preoperative period based on the day’s schedule.
  • Complete and review the patient’s pre-operative assessment prior to procedure time.
  • Identify the patient and surgery location.
  • Review, assess, and complete the patient’s medical history, current health status, consent forms, etc. and update the patient chart accordingly.
  • Contact the appropriate individuals regarding any abnormalities.
  • Ensure that the patient and their family member(s)/guest(s) understand the surgery process and postoperative procedures.
  • Carry out any directives given by the anesthesiologist and physician prior to the procedure.
  • Pass out medication as directed.
  • Perform peripheral IV punctures as needed.
  • Complete preoperative phone calls as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
  • Assess the patient’s level of anesthesia emergence in accordance with policies, procedures, and ASPAN standards using the report from the OR nurse and/or the anesthesiologist.
  • Monitor vital signs (i.e. the patient’s respiratory, cardiovascular, circulatory, neurological, etc. status.)
  • Asses the fluid administration site; including tubes, drains, etc. for patency, drainage amount, character, position, etc.
  • Maintain oxygenation and patient airway to allow for proper breathing.
  • Observe surgical site for any bleeding or abnormalities.
  • Administers medications safely and accurately.
  • Execute the physician’s orders in a timely manner.
  • Implement patient comfort measures as appropriate (i.e. medication for pain and nausea, position changes, temperature control, etc.)
  • Document all observations and nursing care provided accurately and thoroughly on the appropriate forms.
  • Educate patient and family on postoperative instructions.
  • Discharge patient according to the physician’s orders, patient’s condition, and standards of care.
  • Complete postoperative telephone calls and document them in the patient chart.
  • Observe cost containment practices; evaluate and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • Address and respond to all complaints in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the QI plan as directed by the Clinical Manager. Comply with Quality Improvement and Adverse Incident reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
