About The Position

This is a Great Lakes Bay Position Surgery/GI Coordinator RN Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Surgical Coordinator RN position is responsible for being the primary resource person to the team members in regard to clinical questions, training opportunities, and equipment/instrumentation for each surgical specialty. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model. The Surgical Coordinator RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statement to guide leadership and practice. The Surgical Coordinator RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence-based practice and research findings.

Requirements

  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Required Equivalent Experience - Within 6 months of hire or transfer into position.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support Required Equivalent Experience - Within 3 months of hire
  • CNOR - Peri-Operative Nurs-NCC Required Equivalent Experience - Specialty CNOR Nursing Certification or Advanced Nurse Certification required within 4 years of hire or transfer to position. CNOR certification is defined as: "the documented validation of the professional achievement of identified standards of practice by an individual registered nurse providing care for patients before, during and after surgery." Employees hired or transferred into this position on or before 12/31/15 have two years to obtain CNOR certification.
  • RN - Registered Nurse Required Equivalent Experience -
  • Education: Associates Degree
  • Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through 2 years' experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting.
  • Knowledge of nursing leadership as normally acquired through working 2 years in a Medical Center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, professional development program, shared governance leadership role, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of operating room practices, policies, and procedures as normally acquired through two years’ experience working in the operating room.
  • Basic knowledge of the personal computer.
  • Working knowledge of all OR instruments, GI and equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing are necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and orWalk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67- 100% orthe workday) 10 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively collaborates with physicians and team members so that surgeries are accomplished: efficiently and on time with a minimum of physician complaint; with expected patient outcomes with availability of required equipment performs RN duties as defined in job descriptions.
  • Coordinates the operating room and GI procedure schedule changes as they occur with staff, physicians and other departments. Notifies physicians of delays or conflicts. Communicates and coordinates with anesthesia personnel to facilitate the completion of the day’s schedule along with other pertinent departments, such as pre/post-operative areas.
  • Perform and understand the coordinator role regarding the value analysis process, budget requests, cost reductions, capital requests and projects, along with working collaboratively with VAT Coordinator, Supply Purchase Coordinator, and the purchasing clerk.
  • Monitors and initiates personnel training and evaluation, along with coordinating orientation of their specialty areas. Maintain current clinical knowledge of specialty area. This can be accomplished multiple ways; video conferences, attending conferences, professional certifications, professional journals, along with individual skills as evidence by performing cases along with surgeons.
  • Identifies preventative maintenance needs for specialty equipment.
  • Assures pick list and preference card changes made for the specialty are current and accurate.
  • Collaborates with purchasing coordinator to maintain specialty inventory.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives within the department.
  • Participates on or leads, operating room projects, serves on committees as appointed by the OR manager and facilitates chart reviews per regulatory agency requirements.
  • Effectively collaborates with physicians and team members so that surgeries are accomplished, efficiently and on time, with a minimum of physician complaint, with expected patient outcome, with availability of required equipment.
  • Previews OR schedule three (3) days in advance.
  • Makes changes, as necessary, to expedite schedules.
  • Monitors schedule for potential pulls.
  • Coordinates and communicates with other departments for all outpatient procedures that impact the operating room schedule.
  • Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management, surgical services staff, and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient.
  • Appraises manager of sensitive, emergent and potential problems with the department.
  • Communicates potential budgetary needs.
  • Assures compliance with the regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS),the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), American Association of Medical Instruments (AAMI), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Association of Operating Room Nurses(AORN), and International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM).
  • Is responsible for maintaining lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors within the designated area, nursing service and other departments within the Medical Center. Maintains high visibility in the operating room.
  • Other duties as assigned.
