About The Position

Inpatient General Surgery PA full time weekdays. Under the general supervision of a physician, the Physician’s Assistant is responsible for providing varied medical services, including: obtaining complete medical history and performing a physical examination; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan; prescribing and/or dispensing medication; assisting in surgery or other invasive procedures; counseling patients and families, and other patient care duties. May be involved with a patient’s medical care in any role which the attending physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, delineation of privileges, and the Physician Assistant’s training, knowledge, skill, and experience This is a full-time position with no weekend, holiday, or night call requirements. Responsibilities include a combination of inpatient floor coverage and operative first assisting for open, laparoscopic, and robotic cases. The role requires strong teamwork skills, as it involves teaching and collaborating with BU surgical residents and medical students, as well as PA students on occasion.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • NCCPA certified and eligible for licensure in Massachusetts
  • Strong clinical judgment and technical surgical skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Prior surgical or operative experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in open, laparoscopic, and/or robotic surgery preferred
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team-based model

Responsibilities

  • Serve as first assist in open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgical cases
  • Perform surgical tasks including tissue handling, exposure, suturing, stapling, and hemostasis
  • Assist with preoperative setup, positioning, and postoperative wound closure
  • Participate in emergent and elective cases as assigned
  • Conduct daily inpatient rounds and patient assessments
  • Write progress notes, discharge summaries, and orders
  • Manage postoperative care, including pain control, drains, wound care, and coordination of consults
  • Respond to patient needs and collaborate with nursing and ancillary staff
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team
  • Participate in the education of surgical residents, medical students, and PA students as appropriate
  • Demonstrate strong communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced academic setting
