The Novelis Surface Science team, located in Kennesaw, GA, is seeking a Surface R&D Co-Op. This role is responsible for detailed surface characterization and analysis of rolled sheet aluminum. A battery of evaluation techniques, including tribological, surface, corrosion, and microstructural characterization will be employed to differentiate surface quality, properties, and performance. The general output of this study will serve as foundational knowledge to bridge the process-property-performance understanding from a surface perspective. This co-op position will start May 2026 and end in December 2026.

Requirements

  • Engineering or Materials Science undergraduate senior
  • Lab work or research experience
  • Lab safety awareness
  • Fundamental knowledge in one or more the following: Tribology, Metallurgy, Electrochemistry, Corrosion

Nice To Haves

  • Engineering or Materials Science graduate level student
  • Surface characterization experience
  • Knowledge of metal processing (rolling, heat treatment, mechanical testing)
  • Project management
  • Data Correlation and Statistical analysis of large data sets

Responsibilities

  • Observe all environmental, health and safety regulations
  • Collaborate with Scientist and Engineers for design of experiments and creating detailed test plans
  • Coordinate material preparation and submission through LIMS and act as liaison between Project and Laboratory teams
  • Surface analysis techniques including but not limited to SEM/EDS, XPS, topography, contact angle, electrochemical measurements, tribometer testing
  • Communicate and present findings
