About The Position

JOB SUMMARY: (the purpose and general nature of the job): Supervise and participate in the development of CNC programs and machining techniques for processing of metal parts. Lead the standardization and optimization of department processes and procedures. Oversee the operation of the tool-crib and provide technical support to maximize the performance of CNC equipment in production.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Programming – writing computer programs for CNC equipment.
  • Ability to solve complex problems, ability to use good judgement to make good decisions considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Ability to draw using AutoCAD or SolidWorks software.
  • Prior experience requirements: machinist, programmer (control-based programming – conversational and/ or G&M codes), CAM programming, CAD experience (2D and Solid Modeling).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the daily activities of all CNC Programmers and Tool Crib Technician(s).
  • Standardize and optimize CNC Programming processes and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, software selection and applications, machining strategies, tooling and toolpath selection, setup documentation requirements, and knowledge and information sharing practices.
  • Standardize and optimize Tool Crib processes and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, staging of jobs, storage, and cleaning of tools and toolholders, maintenance of tooling inventory, determination of when to dispose of used tools, practices for using re-grind tools, etc.
  • Develop and implement processes to reduce, prevent, and/ or eliminate errors and increase consistency.
  • Define and maintain processes to supply any necessary information for equipment using conversational programming.
  • Enhance and support the technical and professional growth and development of CNC Programmers and Tool Crib Technician(s).
  • Analyze tool life and tooling costs and implement improvements at both a macro and job-specific level.
  • Understand tradeoffs between factors such as surface finish, cycle time, and tool expense and how outputs effect downstream operations. Use that understanding to guide appropriate decision-making.
  • Stay abreast of the latest technologies in CNC machining. Conduct and monitor trials of new tools, techniques, and machining technologies.
  • Provide technical expertise and support related to manufacturing.
  • Ensure regular collaboration with the processing group regarding process improvement opportunities and capabilities.
  • Clear and professional communication with managers, peers, and subordinates.
