About The Position

The Operations Supervisor is responsible for directing and managing the operation of coal-fired generating units, with a focus on maximizing unit output, efficiency, environmental compliance, and high unit availability. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Proven technical competence and understanding of fossil-fueled electric power production processes.
  • Previous supervisory experience of bargaining unit employees in an industrial environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to foster teamwork, participation, and individual accountability to achieve high expectations.
  • Experience documenting/evaluating employee performance, administering overtime, and enforcing policies.
  • Effective dispute resolution skills, including grievance hearings and contract interpretation.
  • Commitment to safety and proper use of PPE.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent heavy industrial experience.
  • Strong business sense and dedication to competitiveness.
  • Ability to work a 12-hour shift rotation and adapt to changing schedules.
  • Physical ability to work in high noise, dust, extreme temperatures, and hazardous environments; climb ladders/stairs; and work near heavy equipment.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Four-year degree in engineering, operations management, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of supervisory experience in fossil power generation or a similar industrial setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of generation station design, operations, and maintenance.
  • Understanding of combustion principles, steam generator, and steam turbine operations.
  • Familiarity with electrical transmission systems and switchyard operations.
  • Experience with sub-critical, controlled circulation drum boilers and negative-draft pulverizer coal mills.
  • Experience with mechanical-draft cooling tower operation.
  • Technical competence in fossil fuel power plants.
  • Understanding of power plant process controls/computers (e.g., Foxboro systems).
  • Working knowledge of coal-fired boiler emission regulations (NOx, particulate, mercury).
  • Experience collaborating on operations/maintenance procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage the operations of coal-fired units, emphasizing output, efficiency, environmental compliance, and availability.
  • Promote and enforce safe work habits among Operations personnel, optimizing productivity and equipment use.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance and Planning departments to prioritize unit and system requirements, maximizing reliability.
  • Provide daily coordination, facilitation, and direction for station activities.
  • Communicate openly, clearly, and frequently with all stakeholders.
  • Serve as the lead management representative during back shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Document and evaluate employee performance, administer overtime, manage timekeeping, and enforce company policies.
  • Handle disputes, conduct grievance hearings, and interpret/apply company and union contracts.
  • Ensure use of safe work methods and personal protective equipment.
  • Control budgetary expenditures as set by senior management.
  • Collaborate on the creation and revision of Operations and Maintenance procedures.
