About The Position

The Criminal Prosecutions Bureau of the Cook County States Attorney Office is seeking a Supervisor to lead the First Municipal Division located at four different locations within Chicago, Illinois. The Supervisor of the First Municipal Division will direct misdemeanor Assistant States Attorneys within the First Municipal Division. In conjunction with the Deputy Supervisor of the First Municipal Division, they are also responsible for reviewing all new misdemeanor cases for conditions hearings and make appropriate recommendations based on the case and in line with all CCSAO policies, evaluating cases for appropriate dispositions, as well as training prosecutors on court case and court room experience, including litigation preparation for motions, bench trials, and jury trials. This is a full-time bargaining unit exempt position.

Requirements

  • Must be able to manage the needs of junior attorneys, including caseload management, training, and support junior attorneys in pursuing long-term development opportunities.
  • Must consistently observe and review the work of attorneys, both inside and outside of the courtroom, to offer productive feedback and motivate ongoing improvements.
  • Must have strong analytical, writing and oral advocacy skills; advanced case law and statutory knowledge in criminal law and procedure; and must serve as a personal and professional resource and thought partner to junior attorneys and colleagues.
  • Must consistently demonstrate sound judgment, critical thinking, dedication to work product, and effective time management, while also supporting junior attorneys in doing so.
  • Must uphold the mission and values of the Office at all times and support junior attorneys in doing the same.
  • Must exercise integrity and decorum in all situations.

Nice To Haves

  • 12 years of litigation experience in criminal law with prior experience in Misdemeanor related matters.
  • Completed at least one tour as a Trial Supervisor in the Felony Review Unit or served in a supervisory position within CCSAO for at least 2 years.
  • Prior Grand Jury/Preliminary Hearings experience
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate others.
  • Working knowledge of case initiation and case management systems

Responsibilities

  • The Supervisor of the First Municipal Division is responsible for the oversight of the First Municipal Division concerning misdemeanor matters within the Cook County States Attorneys Office and must ensure that cases from presentation through disposition are prosecuted fairly and handled properly and that the ASAs are correctly trained in all aspects of their job.
  • The Supervisor is also responsible for communicating with and supervising the Deputy Supervisor to ensure efficient functioning of the unit and consistency in decisions that shall align with the Mission, Vision and Values of the Cook County States Attorneys Office.
  • The Supervisor is responsible for the daily training of ASAs assigned to the unit and must engage in daily education and mentoring of the ASAs.
  • The Supervisor must be aware of significant litigation handled in the First Municipal Division and will regularly consult with the ASAs on those matters, as well as the Deputy Supervisor of the First Municipal Division, when needed.
  • The Supervisor shall be an effective advocate and emissary of the mission, vision and values of the Cook County States Attorneys Office both with ASAs as well as criminal justice stakeholders and partners.
