About The Position

The University of Iowa Facilities Management is seeking a highly motivated person to work as a Supervisor, Fire and Life Safety. Under general supervision, provides leadership and oversight to assigned personnel within Fire and Life Safety. Serves as a working supervisor, performing the duties of direct reports as needed, including during emergencies. Oversees daily operations by establishing work schedules, assigning and reassigning tasks. Maintains accurate and organized records related to timekeeping, work assignments to support operational efficiency and accountability. Evaluates employee performance to uphold high standards of service, safety, and workmanship. Actively participates in all stages of the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, interviewing, hiring recommendations, employee and labor relations, performance management, career development, and terminations. Provides onboarding, training, and orientation for new staff to ensure operational readiness and compliance with departmental standards. Serves in back-up supervisor capacity in absence of Associate Director. This position is performed fully on campus. Duties to Include: Hires, onboards, trains, and provides feedback and development opportunities for assigned staff. Evaluates, writes and provides meaningful performance reviews. Perform Fire and Life Safety Compliance Inspections, as well as assists technicians with inspections and repair work of the fire and life safety equipment. Develops work schedules, allocates resources, and monitors task completion. Review installation for code compliance. Installs, repairs, replaces and calibrates complex life safety equipment and support systems Use technology as required in fulfilment of position (e.g., email, Employee Self Service, work order system). Location: MSSB Shift : Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM- 3:30 PM . May be eligible for flexible schedule to be discussed during interview process. Due to the critical operational needs of the department, this position may be required to work overtime and participate in the Facilities Management Standby Program. About Facilities Management: Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, and maintain and clean the buildings and grounds.

Requirements

  • Four years’ experience excluding apprenticeship in the applicable craft, trade or plant service supervised; or the equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet University Driving Policy standards.
  • Appropriate certifications in specialized field including NICET (sprinkler/alarm).

Nice To Haves

  • Personnel oversight and HR administrative: Minimum one-year supervisory experience, including assigning daily tasks, monitoring work quality, coordinating schedules, ensuring timely and accurate timekeeping, and conducting performance evaluations; preferably in higher education or public sector environment.
  • Five years of related experience, which includes regular participation in activities such as project planning, designing, ensuring code compliance, estimating project costs, investigating problems, recommending actions or similar tasks.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including the ability to learn and use specialized software systems, such as: computerized maintenance management system (CMMS; preferably AiM), Microsoft (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams)
  • Familiarity with HR processes and employee relations at the University of Iowa.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and communicate professionally and effectively with university personnel, external contacts, and the public in both written and verbal formats.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Knowledge of various types of fire extinguishers and their appropriate applications.
  • Understanding of fire prevention principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain equipment, including hand and power tools.
  • Capability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Willingness and ability to work in varied environments, including at heights, in confined spaces, poorly lit areas, and in conditions with elevated noise levels or potential exposure to chemical, biological, radiological, neurological, or other environmental hazards.
