About The Position

Works under general direction of Administrator to direct and schedule personnel in maintenance, repair and upkeep of the facility’s building structures and systems, including plumbing, electrical wiring and fixtures, machinery, equipment, electronics, vehicles, institutional grounds.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience working in a Maintenance lead/ supervisory capacity; AND
  • Bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, management, or related field; OR
  • An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.
  • PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
  • Knowledge of supervision and personnel management practices and techniques.
  • Managerial/leadership abilities and knowledge of the activities supervised.
  • Knowledge of building, plumbing and electrical codes and requirements for prisons.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct the activities of assigned personnel in the unit.
  • Ability to plan, organize and maintain an even flow of work.
  • Ability to maintain continuous mental alertness and reasoning ability.
  • Ability to prepare composite reports and make sound recommendations.
  • Ability to provide in-service training.
  • Knowledge and skills to interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to operate PC including working knowledge of Microsoft Windows.
  • Ability to perform extensive skills in use of Microsoft Office, specifically including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must provide proof of Shelby County residency.
  • Must be able to function in a prison environment.
  • Will be required to pass a physical a drug test and a TB screening.
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, weekends and be on call.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises maintenance staff and assigned inmates/residents in the performance of their duties and evaluate as prescribed by the facility and corporate policy. This includes, but is not limited to, training new employees, evaluating performance and preparing written performance appraisals, listening to complaints and effectively resolving disputes or problems, developing work schedules for subordinates, monitoring work assignments and preparing inmate/resident work assignments.
  • Schedules and assigns work activities of assigned employees and is accountable for results.
  • Monitors, inspects and interprets maintenance work performed in-house, and projects accomplished by outside contractors for compliance with building codes, blueprints, manuals and other applicable procedures or specifications and determines that workmanship and materials are in compliance with current building and correctional standards.
  • Coordinates activities with other Division management to meet divisional goals and objectives.
  • Performs routine inspections for the facility for safety, maintenance and related issues, directs corrective actions for problems detected.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
