About The Position

This position is a supervisory position in the Nisqually Corrections facility. The Corrections Sergeant is responsible for direct supervision of the facility, operations, and staff.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Must hold a current certification from the BIA Corrections Officer Training Program or equivalent academy.
  • 3 years' recent work experience as a Corrections Officer and at least 1 year of supervisory experience in Corrections or a closely related field.
  • Successful completion of certified supervision course.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Must have an acceptable ranking on an examination based on knowledge, skills, and abilities to include an oral, written, and physical agility exam.
  • Must have no felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature which would lend them to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, or any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical exam.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the duties of Corrections Officer.
  • Supervise staff, operations, and the facility during assigned shift.
  • Review and appropriately channel reports of daily activities and other report job related information.
  • Make facility inspections.
  • Manage routine and emergency facility operations.
  • Make personnel assignments and shift assignments.
  • Conduct segregation reviews, make housing recommendations, and direct inmate classification programs.
  • Keep records and compose reports on jail functions.
  • Provide training to subordinates on corrections related operations rules, procedures, and other custody related subjects
  • Complete performance evaluations and take corrective actions.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures for the corrections facility.
  • Ensure access to and continuity of facility programs.
  • Review disciplinary committee hearings and findings.
  • Maintain the secure and orderly operation of the facility, being prepared to respond in emergency situations.
  • Oversee the care and custody of inmates incarcerated in the jail.
