About The Position

Under general direction of a manager or other higher level official in the Department of Environmental Protection, supervises, plans, organizes, and directs work programs and staff involved in regulating the use of radiation producing machines, licensing of technologists in various disciplines, and is responsible for resolving specific issues relative to radiation safety; does other related duties as required. Specific to the Position The staff member will provide oversight and management of the three sections in the Bureau of X-ray Compliance responsible for Machine Source Inspections, Mammography Inspections, and Technologist Education and Licensing. The staff member will review enforcement documents in NJEMS and submit them to the manager for review and approval. Responsible for the review each the various sections of the monthly report, preparation of annual work plans, the review exemption request for CORP's approval, training of new employees, scheduling inspections, performing inspections of MQSA certified facilities to maintain certification, development of Bureau SOPs, preparing ePars, approving time sheets, approving time off requests, attending supervisors' meetings, and participating in nuclear emergency response drills associated with the three nuclear power plants.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Radiologic Technology, Radiation Science or Environmental Sciences, which includes sixteen (16) semester credit hours in any combination of the following lab-based courses: physics, chemistry, biology or medical imaging.
  • EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of experience in the field of radiation science, two (2) years of which shall include supervisory responsibilities. This experience is to include at least four (4) years in working with or directly regulating radioactive materials, radiation producing machine sources, or individuals utilizing radiation sources and two (2) years of experience in using qualitative and quantitative radiation analytical instrumentation such as gamma-ray spectrometry, alpha spectrometry, alpha scintillation, liquid scintillation instrumentation, or ionization chambers, Kvp meter, pulse counters, Geiger and proportional counters.
  • NOTE: Applicants may substitute a Master's degree in one of the disciplines indicated above for one (1) year of the non- supervisory experience working with or directly regulating radioactive materials, radiation producing machine sources or individuals utilizing radiation sources or, a Doctor's degree in one of the disciplines indicated above for two (2) years of the non-supervisory experience working with or directly regulating radioactive materials, radiation producing machine sources or individuals utilizing radiation sources.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011, have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act”.
  • Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States per the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship, and Immigration Services regulations.
