About The Position

San Diego State University is seeking a highly skilled and organized Supervising Locksmith to lead locksmith and access control operations. This role ensures secure, efficient, and code-compliant physical access across campus through supervision, project coordination, and direct technical work. Lead a mission-critical team ensuring campus safety and access reliability. Combine leadership, planning, and hands-on skills in a fast-paced environment. Play a vital role in infrastructure upgrades, emergency response, and physical security. Work collaboratively with trades and departments to support SDSU’s operational excellence.

Requirements

  • The abilities of a Supervising Locksmith normally would be acquired through three or more years of experience as a journey-level locksmith that included one to two years in a lead or supervisory capacity and thorough training in master key systems and electronic locking and security systems.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in the locksmith trade, including proper use and care of equipment.
  • Must have comprehensive knowledge of master key systems, complex access control systems, key management software, and all types of locking and fastening devices.
  • Working knowledge of electronic locking and security systems.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations related to the locksmith trade, including ADA requirements, fire/life safety codes, door hardware standards, and Cal/OSHA and Federal OSHA safety regulations.
  • Must have strong supervisory knowledge and effective leadership skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations, procedures and work methods and exercise appropriate judgement in resolving problems and establishing priorities and work methods.
  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
  • License or Certification as a Locksmith.

  • Prior experience in a similar higher education environment, or a large multi-building facilities environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assign and oversee daily work for locksmith and access control staff; monitor progress and inspect completed work.
  • Conduct quality control checks, document performance, and participate in evaluations.
  • Maintain accurate labor, job cost, and materials records using CMMS and ensure compliance with time and material standards.
  • Ensure work aligns with safety protocols and meets operational goals.
  • Schedule projects, determine materials and staffing needs, and act as subject matter expert for locking systems.
  • Coordinate inventory, requisitions, and vendor communications; oversee training for compliance and safety.
  • Collaborate with Public Safety and other trades on project planning and scheduling.
  • Lead the master key system and support access strategy planning for construction and renovations.
  • Lead and perform repairs on mechanical locks, hardware, openers, and electronic access control devices.
  • Support renovation projects by installing or modifying locking and access systems to meet codes and specifications.
  • Ensure reliability of integrated systems with security or building automation infrastructure.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance for the longevity of locking systems.
  • Respond to lockouts and access issues; perform emergency rekeys and repairs to restore access.
  • Cut and pin keys, maintain key documentation, and ensure secure recordkeeping.
  • Maintain shop organization, tools, inventory, and safe working conditions in compliance with department standards.
  • Support the department in general shop and emergency tasks, including collaboration across Facilities Services.
