About The Position

The superintendent is responsible for ensuring the seamless and safe execution of cargo handling operations within a designated area. This position requires a general understanding of materials handling, safety protocols, and efficient resource management. The Superintendent oversees a team of longshoremen engaged in vessel and terminal operations, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry standards. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a leadership role in an industrial/maritime environment, or
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ supervisory experience in a related field or equivalent combination of education and field experience.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English at an advanced level in a business environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Standard skills in programs such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Assertive individual with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in an industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others and participate as a team player.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and display strong initiative.
  • Willingness to work multiple operations and flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Capacity to think logically, establish and follow procedures, instructions, and exhibit excellent decision-making skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in logistics, transportation, or related field.
  • Familiarization with OSHA regulations desired.
  • Maritime operations experience.
  • Cargo handling experience (especially bulk steel).
  • Familiarity with heavy lift crane operations.
  • Experience with safety standards, practices, planning, and implementation (OSHA, ANSI, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of vessel operations, including loading, unloading, berthing, and departure procedures.
  • Collaborate with customers to optimize cargo handling processes and enhance overall operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, maritime laws, and environmental standards.
  • Monitor vessel schedules and optimize operational efficiency to meet customer demands and company objectives.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as logistics and maintenance, to streamline operations and resolve any operational issues.
  • Optimize the allocation of resources, including personnel, equipment, and supplies, to maximize operational efficiency and minimize costs.
  • Develop and implement strategies to manage operational challenges, such as inclement weather, equipment breakdowns, or labor shortages.
  • Maintain effective communication channels with customers, logistical partners, and senior management.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks and accidents during vessel operations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of vessels, equipment, and facilities to ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Stay updated on maritime regulations, industry best practices, and technological advancements to enhance safety and compliance measures.
  • Lead and manage a team of vessel operations staff, including supervisors, operators, and longshoremen.
  • Provide training, guidance, and support to ensure the professional development and competency of team members.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, address disciplinary issues, and foster a positive work environment conducive to teamwork and collaboration.
  • Investigate and report any incidents, accidents, or non-compliance issues, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Identify and prevent waste regarding equipment and materials/consumables used in daily operations.
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people, equipment, etc.) always.
  • Report safety hazards.
  • Immediately report incidents involving injury, illness, or property damage
  • Wear appropriate PPE.
  • Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Refuse any unsafe task or operation.
  • Stop work if imminent danger exists.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training.
  • Be constantly aware of their personal safety and that of their coworkers.
