About The Position

Comprised of two interconnected neighborhoods - Ironwood and Oakwood - the community is among the most desirable retirement destinations in the Valley thanks to its combination of mature landscape, diverse amenities, and in-town location. The community features two fabulous clubhouses, 45 holes of golf, fitness, tennis & pickleball, softball, pools, trails, and much more. As a member of the Golf Course Maintenance Team, the Second Assistant Superintendent helps coordinate daily operations of the golf maintenance staff-meeting or exceeding established standards for employee satisfaction, guest satisfaction, sales, and financial performance. This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Turf Science, Landscape, Horticulture, Agronomy or similar field, preferred or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • One to two years' related experience in a related field, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and the local professional superintendent's association.
  • Certified Applicator License, applicable to state.
  • Computer literate with proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or needs of staff members, guests, and vendors.
  • Ability to present information to management or staff.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret as-builts, reports, plans, labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and regulatory documents.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as calibration rates, proportions, percentages and volume.
  • Must possess basic computational ability as well as budgetary analysis.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must be able to lead by example by taking a proactive position to all issues concerning the golf maintenance staff.
  • Must have strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, with excellent customer services skills and an ability to respond to the needs and requests of coworkers and clients.
  • Must be able to consistently achieve high work standards; attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Must demonstrate initiative, with an ability to think, work, solve practical problems, and make independent decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where continuous improvement is expected.
  • This position requires a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends, as well as possible travel.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate the core values and mission of BlueStar Resort & Golf (BSRG) to support the achievement of company goals.
  • Support the development of long range plans for the division and communicate BSRG goals and objectives to staff to encourage company engagement and commitment to their positions, facilitate the continual delivery of exceptional products to the marketplace, and provide profit contributions to the company.
  • Create an enjoyable and productive work environment by leading by example and taking a proactive position to all issues concerning course operation, safety, and human resource issues.
  • Mentor and help develop staff in all areas, including equipment operations, irrigation maintenance and operation, spraying techniques, and safety orientation and training.
  • Collaborate with the Superintendent to support employee development and succession plans by developing creative programs for the retention and recognition of employees and by coaching staff to encourage a commitment to personal learning and development.
  • Interview, hire, and directly supervise staff in accordance with BSRG policies and procedures, including planning, assigning tasks, and, at times, performing activities of workers supervised.
  • Work with the Superintendent to determine crew assignments; communicate with staff regarding daily operations and assignments.
  • Maintain open lines of communication between the golf shop staff and golf maintenance staff; work with the golf shop to facilitate outings and tournaments.
  • Work in a safe manner and use all personal protective equipment (safety gear) assigned.
  • Be aware of safety requirements and report unsafe conditions or accidents to supervisor.
  • Monitor maintenance and repair of equipment to ensure proper operation; communicate with management team to ensure timely completion of job tasks if equipment breaks down; purchase parts and maintenance materials as needed.
  • Anticipate fertilizer requirements for the week, month and year; help maintain inventory of fertilizer and chemicals.
  • Increased involvement with budget, payroll, and purchasing; with the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent to monitor expenses.
  • Communicate with the Irrigation Manager to discuss nightly water requirements, including main pumps, the fertigation injection system, and moisture on greens, tees, fairways, rough, trees, tee plants, etc.; monitor the operation of pumps and drainage systems to ensure their satisfactory operation.
  • Discuss the next day fertigation/chemical application with Assistant Superintendent and coordinate, as directed, by Superintendent.
  • Support staff training to use spreaders and sprayers.
  • Attend seminars, as requested, to keep current with developments in the golf industry.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  • New hourly full-time team members working 30 hours or more per week, will be eligible for the Company medical, dental and life insurance plans the first of the month following 60 days of full-time employment.
  • Full-Time team members are eligible to accrue Paid Time Off ("PTO") in accordance with the Company policy at a rate of 120 hours per year.
  • Full-Time team members are eligible for 7 paid holidays annually.
  • Part-Time team members are eligible to accrue Paid Sick Leave in accordance with state guidelines.
