About The Position

The Topeka Capital-Journal, cjonline.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a Summer Reporting Intern. The Capital-Journal is a daily newspaper serving a community of 180,000 people in the capital city of Kansas. We pride ourselves on enterprise reporting and digital innovation. Newsroom interns are expected to contribute editorially, and you will be challenged to find story ideas and explore our community during the 10 weeks in Topeka, Kansas. We’re seeking students who are looking for a professional-level experience and have the initiative, skills and judgment to excel. The program will include extensive one-on-one coaching and mentoring, but students are expected to handle stories independently and effectively in a deadline-driven environment. This role could include day and nighttime hours in the newsroom depending on the newsroom’s needs and your schedule.

Requirements

  • Degree-seeking student currently enrolled at a college or university.
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, adaptable and flexible.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Access to published writing clips required as part of application assessment for all newsroom internship roles.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.

Responsibilities

  • Newsroom interns will work with breaking news, state government and enterprise content teams to learn and sharpen basic and advanced journalism skills, handling reporting, writing, editing, online production, research, database work, investigative work, audio and visual journalism.
  • Interns will participate in news meetings, where they’ll learn about how news developments take shape.
