About The Position

The unpaid student nurse extern performs delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor. The delegated tasks are those that have been taught in academic programs and/or orientation, are within the functions allowed by law to be performed by unlicensed personnel, and that the individual has demonstrated competence to the designated nurse. Under the direction of the preceptor, the extern has the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and appropriately interpret information relative to the patient's age specific needs.

Requirements

• Applicants must have successfully completed one of the following: 1. Completion of your junior year of a baccalaureate nursing program, including two semesters of clinical nursing experience. 2. Completion of your third semester (Block III) of an associate degree nursing program.
• The Summer Extern program dates are May 26, 2026 through July 20, 2026 . Applicants must be able to complete 8 consecutive weeks of the program. We are unable to work around school or work schedules during the 8 weeks of the program.
• Internal applicants currently employed by Mayo Clinic must apply through the opportunity marketplace internal career center site in Oracle.
• Internal applicants are required to attach their three most recent performance appraisals. Or if less than three completed, please attach as many as are available.
• Applicants must attach a current resume including clinical rotation information, degree and anticipated graduation date.
• Skills checklist or some form of verification of their skills acquired within their nursing program.
• BLS - Applicants must attach proof of completion. NOTE: if your BLS is due to expire during the externship, you must renew your card prior to the first day of the program (5/26/26).
• Nursing Programs must be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
