About The Position

As a lifeguard, your primary responsibility is for the safety of any person in the pool area and using the swimming pool. This includes supervising recreational swimmers through proper scanning and consistent rule enforcement, preventing accidents and injuries, and providing emergency intervention. You will also provide individual assistance to members and guests as needed. This position is exclusively available to enrolled American University students. Most student positions at American University are eligible for Federal Work Study (FWS) awards, with specific exceptions for janitorial, construction, partisan, or sectarian roles.

Requirements

High school diploma or its equivalent is required.
Must have current Red Cross Lifeguard/First aid, and CPR/AED certification.
Must demonstrate swimming skills and rescue methods.
Demonstrate fitness through 300 M swim.
Demonstrate tact and judgment in decision-making.
Demonstrate ability to take direction from the head guard(s).
This position is available only to enrolled American University students.

Responsibilities

Maintain current required training certifications during your tenure.
Educate, observe, and enforce all facility and pool rules in a friendly and helpful manner.
Report potential hazards and unsafe conditions immediately to the Aquatics Facility Manager.
Assist in maintaining pool cleanliness by participating in the cleaning duties assigned.
Arrive on time for your shift, 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the shift, and in uniform.
Complete weekly tasks that keep skills current during the fall, spring, and summer sessions.
Participate in the monthly mandatory staff in-service training.
Perform as a team player by finding substitutes for scheduled shifts and agreeing to do your share of rental and sub work.
