About The Position

API Legal Outreach is the largest social justice legal organization focused on the Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, and immigrant communities of the Greater Bay Area and the Central Valley. A growing community-based organization founded in 1975, our mission is to provide culturally competent and linguistically appropriate direct services to the most marginalized segments of our community including low-income women, seniors, immigrants, and youth. With offices in Oakland and San Francisco, our work is focused in the areas of Gender-based Violence, Immigration and Immigrant Rights, Disability Rights, Senior Law and Elder Abuse, Anti-Human Trafficking, Youth Violence Prevention, Anti API Hate Violence, the preservation of affordable housing and small businesses, and other social justice issues. Position Overview APILO is seeking Summer Law Clerks who are passionate about providing culturally competent legal services to vulnerable, low income members of the community. APILO seeks law clerks interested in working with at least one of the following practice areas: Housing, Immigration, Anti-Human Trafficking, Elder Law, Domestic Violence/Family Law, and Anti-API Hate. Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited law school.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough legal research and produce clear, concise legal memoranda or other legal documents.
  • Demonstrated passion or experience advocating for underserved communities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multicultural team and adapt to the dynamic nature of legal casework.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual and bicultural skills relevant to low-income communities, especially API languages or Spanish.
  • Working knowledge of Legal Server or other case management software.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with providing direct legal representation to low income community members under the supervision of legal staff.
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda to support and assist attorneys in case preparation.
  • Draft and review legal documents under the supervision of licensed attorneys.
  • Assist in the initial intake process, gathering preliminary information from potential clients through telephone and in-person interviews.
  • Support community education initiatives by helping prepare materials and presentations and attending outreach events.
  • Attend meetings and collaborate with community partners, ensuring that the organization's legal perspective is represented.
  • Attend court hearings, client meetings, and other relevant events for client work.
