About The Position

The Village of Palatine Department of Public Works is seeking a... Summer Laborer Job Description: Essential job functions include, but are not limited to: Assists with Forestry Division activities including planting, weeding, mulching, and general care of landscape beds, medians, pots and planters throughout the Village; maintaining the urban forest; brush collection; preparing civic displays; and landscape improvements. Assists with Streets Division activities including maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks and parking lots; maintaining Village signage; and installing temporary signage for special events. Assists with Utilities Division activities including hydrant flushing, sewer flushing, valve exercising, and creek maintenance. Operates a variety of light-duty trucks and equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems, streets, and urban forest. Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment; reports malfunctions to supervisor. Assists with the preparations and tear down/cleanup for events, festivals, and special functions.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate vehicles, equipment and machinery such as light-duty trucks, hand and power tools, mowers, string trimmers, brush chippers, hedge trimmers, and chain saws
  • Ability to tolerate both inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Position is performed under fluctuating and extreme temperatures, with some exposure to noise
  • Must be eligible for employment in the U.S. and pass a pre-employment background check and medical and drug screening (including cannabis)
  • Must be 18 or older and enrolled as a full-time student in college for fall 2026
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license is required
