About The Position

Under general supervision, performs laboratory assistant work within the laboratories of the Harford County Division of Water and Sewer. Work involves routine sampling as well as chemical, bacteriological, and physical testing and analysis of raw, partially treated, and treated water and/or wastewater and by-products. These analyses are used to determine the efficiency of plant processes and to ensure that plant effluent meets Local, State, and Federal requirements. Also, chemical and bacteriological testing of drinking water is required to ensure that it meets water quality standards as mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act at the Local, State, and Federal levels.

Requirements

  • To qualify, an applicant must be a college student entering the sophomore or a higher class in the Spring of 2025 and must be majoring in Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related major.
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points.

  • Good knowledge of and the ability to perform routine chemical and/or bacteriological tests and interpret test results
  • Good knowledge of laboratory supplies, equipment, and nomenclature
  • Ability to keep records and train others in simple procedures
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical functions using a calculator
  • Ability to use an analytical balance
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to reach and lift light to medium weight objects up to 50 lbs. which includes overhead reaching
  • Ability to push and pull objects
  • Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations, and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manual as required for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts tests on samples of treatment plant raw water and/or influent, partially treated water and/or wastewater, sludge, effluent, and other by-products
  • Samples and conducts tests on industrial waste discharges, special water quality studies, and drinking water samples
  • Prepares chemical and bacteriological media, stains, reagents, and test solutions used in laboratory and field testing
  • Performs quality control procedures on prepared media, stains, reagents, and test solutions to ensure compliance with laboratory quality assurance program.
  • Assembles instruments, equipment, and media necessary for the various tests
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory quality assurance programs to ensure compliance with the state drinking water certification program, NPDES program, and any other federal, state, or local regulations
  • Records and interprets test results
  • Adheres to all safety rules and regulations
  • Cleans and maintains instruments and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned
