The Congestion Management Research Intern position resides in the Advanced Technology Group at CableLabs. This department develops future solutions to today’s networking problems. Why This Internship Is Exciting You will play a part in researching state-of-the-art Internet congestion management methods that will shape the ultra-low latency and high throughput network experiences of the future.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an engineering or computer science Ph.D. program with a research emphasis on networking protocols and technology
  • Top-to-bottom familiarity with the Internet/OSI layer model for networks, with particularly strong understanding of L2/L3/L4.
  • Excellent analytical skills, including statistical analysis and experimental design
  • Strong programming abilities in C, C++, Python
  • Understanding of network simulation methods
  • Experience building and configuring small research networks
  • A detail-oriented mindset and strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Nice To Haves

  • Research interest and experience relating to congestion control algorithms
  • Understanding of the L4S architecture
  • Experience with end-to-end performance testing of networks and network protocols
  • Experience with network simulation, particularly ns3
  • Strong familiarity with layer 2 protocols
  • An understanding of factors that influence quality of experience for networked applications

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with your mentor, design a set of experiments to study the impact that network congestion management methods have on application quality of service for a set of real-world applications and traffic conditions.
  • Build a research network and configure nodes to conduct experiments
  • Develop/configure network simulation models
  • Develop test automation and data analysis software
  • Investigate anomalies and explore design decisions and implementation tradeoffs
  • Research novel methods for congestion management with an aim toward maximizing quality of experience
