About The Position

Student Intern - Research & Development The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is seeking a motivated Student Intern – R&D to join our JMCRS Research & Development (R&D) team. This internship provides hands-on experience within a regulated research environment while supporting initiatives focused on process engineering, operational efficiency, automation, and new product/process development. The intern will work alongside scientists, engineers, and operational teams to help enhance workflows that directly support JAX’s mission of improving human health. Internship Duration: Late May – Early August 2026 (approximately 10-weeks) Location: Bar Harbor, Maine (on-site)

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and process metrics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and familiarity with basic data analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in automation, robotics, or controls engineering.
  • Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with process mapping, SIPOC analysis, and documentation of JMCRS workflows, including activities in the R&D vivarium and other operational areas.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze operational data to identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support prototype testing related to automation, ergonomic solutions, or new process designs.
  • Document observations, results, and recommendations to contribute to feasibility assessments for new or revised processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups including R&D Husbandry, Operational Excellence (OpEx) Continuous Improvement, and Operations.
