About The Position

The Parks Exhibition Center Gallery Manager will report to and work with the Visual Arts Department Chair, the Executive Director, Native American Arts Center, and the Summer Program Director, supporting all aspects of Parks Exhibition Center’s summer operations onsite. Together, the PEC Manager and Gallery Assistant curate weekly exhibitions of artwork by faculty, guest artists and students; host receptions and artist talks; facilitate sales; and engage with the campus community and general public. The Gallery Manager is a self-starter, a creative and flexible problem-solver, and is essential to the summer gallery operations. Successful candidates will be able to multitask, work both independently and with supervision, and will be comfortable interacting with a range of gallery visitors. This role requires working occasional late evenings for special events.

Nice To Haves

  • BA degree in Fine Arts, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related subject; with 4 years directly related professional experience in gallery/museum management. This includes experience as an art preparator and/or curator, and in sales.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (e.g., Gmail, Docs, Sheets)
  • Value placed on organization and attentiveness to detail with excellent follow-up skills.
  • Proactive working style and able to prioritize and manage a variety of tasks to meet various deadlines.
  • Comfortable interacting with a wide range of constituents, from artists, students, staff and the general public.
  • Must have the ability to lift and carry objects up to 30 lbs, incl. bulky and fragile items
  • Prior experience with the following is requisite: Handling, (un)packing and installing artwork for an exhibition setting; Planning and coordinating events; Use of power and hand tools; Experience printing and installing exhibition wall vinyl.
  • Digital photography for object or installation documentation
  • Point-of-sale systems, such as Square
  • Social Media posting (Facebook)
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop for image editing.
  • Able to work on a ladder at heights up to 15 feet.

Responsibilities

  • Inventory management, to include photographing jewelry and artwork items, writing descriptions and inputting to the gallery’s point-of-sale system.
  • Installing weekly exhibitions of faculty and guest artist work, including art handling and unpacking, lighting and labeling.
  • Adjust gallery installation as items are sold or returned.
  • Recording and tracking sales through a point-of-sale system and spreadsheet.
  • Liaising with guest artists to receive and return consigned artwork.
  • Management of any artist loan agreements, if applicable, for the summer exhibition.
  • Interactions with guests–greet all visitors, maintain a knowledge of artwork on display and assist with all inquiries to engage and process sales of work.
  • Clean jewelry cases daily.
  • Secure and lock the gallery and display cases after business hours.
  • Photographing exhibitions and items on display for promotional and archival purposes.
  • Preparing artwork for shipment, including proper packaging and delivery to campus mailroom.
  • Hosting and breakdown of gallery lectures, demonstrations and receptions.
  • Supervision and directing the work of the PEC Gallery Assistant.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Visual Arts Department Chair and the Executive Director, Summer Programs, and Executive Director of the Native American Arts Center
