About The Position

The Summer Camp Inclusion Coordinator is a key member of the Learning & Engagement team responsible for ensuring camp programming is inclusive and accessible for neurodivergent campers and those with varying abilities. The Coordinator works closely with camp instructors and leadership to implement inclusive practices, recommend accommodations, and provide direct support to campers as needed. This role helps ensure that all campers can fully participate in meaningful, mission-based experiences that connect them with nature.

Requirements

Minimum 6 months working experience in a formal or informal learning environment
Coursework, degree, or certification in social services, paraprofessional, child development or similar field, or equivalent combination of training and experience, including special education, therapeutic recreation, or behavioral analysis.
Demonstrated experience in effective coordination and communication with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds and with differing abilities
Familiarity with current research-based best practices in accessibility and inclusion
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines effectively
Exemplary presentation and oral communication skills
Must be able to commit to all eight weeks of camp and be available for in-person training

Nice To Haves

Demonstrated experience working with and mentoring adult and youth volunteers in an interpretive or educational setting
Experience and/or education in biological/environmental sciences, education, interpretation, or other directly related fields or subjects preferred.
Familiarity with Audubon Camps or similar outdoor programming
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, for program coordination and communication

Responsibilities

Support an inclusive experience for all camp participants, emphasizing both individual abilities and common ground with peers.
Assist in the development and implementation of Camp Staff training regarding inclusion and camper support practices.
Provide direct support to campers with varying abilities as needed during camp activities and while moving around the facility. This includes coordinating accommodations, so the instructors are aware of how to best support the campers.
Primarily based at Audubon Zoo, occasional travel to the Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium to support Aqua Camp.
Provide camp instructors with guidance on research-backed approaches to inclusion that support individuals with various abilities and/or neurodivergence to fully participate in camp programs.
Provide guidance to help adapt activities, rules, equipment and/or supplies as needed to ensure quality participation by all camp participants.
Advising when camp resources are unable to match camper needs and/or suggest tools and resources to expand the camp’s ability to support higher needs.
Be the primary contact and liaison with family provided camper aides.
Communicating with camp families by phone, email, and in person prior to and during camp to gather information about the camper’s needs and provide follow-up on camper successes and challenges.
Engage in peer observation and mentoring with Camp Instructors as a support and resource for inclusion procedures and best practices.
Assisting in the supervision, mentorship, and evaluation of Counselors-in-Training (teen volunteers entering 8th through 12th grade)
Assuring guest and animal safety procedures are followed.
Communicating camper and programming needs or concerns Camp Management in a timely manner.
