About The Position

Camp Counselors at The Children’s Museum of Phoenix are responsible for creating a positive and meaningful camp experience for children 5-8 years of age. Counselors will plan, teach, coordinate, and implement age-appropriate, theme-based activities that promote positive growth for campers. Additional duties include curriculum development and large group facilitation. This is a physically active and team-oriented role requiring walking and standing for long periods of time.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in a camp setting (preferred)
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.
  • Understanding of the development needs of youth.
  • Ability to work quickly, effectively and responsibly without constant direction.
  • Comfortable working around children and large crowds
  • Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner; ability to interact courteously with visitors and staff.
  • Exemplary communication skills
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Ability to observe co-worker behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  • Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Tons of energy (and we mean tons!)
  • A willingness to make a fool of yourself for the sake of making a camper smile.
  • A desire to have fun.
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Pass Criminal Background Check
  • CPR/First Aid Certified (Preferred)
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time on the floor for up to 8 hours and must have good communication skills (i.e., communicate clearly and effectively in both written and spoken English).
  • Must be able to see well and able to read fine print.
  • Must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 25 pounds – maintaining the museum and interacting with guests requires standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, and playing, stooping, bending, and crawling as well as carrying and/or lifting materials.
  • Must be able to work in a well-lit, temperature-controlled work area.
  • May also be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in an open area with other employees.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, and the involvement and empowerment of youth!
  • Assure that groups of up to 40 campers are properly supervised at all times.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers.
  • Responsible for leading or assisting with the teaching of activities.
  • Actively participate in all programming
  • Provide for a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.
  • Provide parents with appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
  • Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.
  • Meet/Communicate regularly with the Camp Coordinator regarding concerns, updates, challenges, etc.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
