About The Position

The Student Resident Advisor (RA) for the African American Student Services (AASS) Summer Bridge Academy plays a vital role in supporting incoming first-year students during a rigorous and transformative three-week transition program. This position is designed for current UNM students who are passionate about mentorship, leadership, and fostering inclusive, community-centered environments. RAs will live alongside program participants during the two-week residential component and provide continued support during the one-week virtual experience. They will help facilitate students’ academic, social, and personal transition to college while upholding program expectations and university policies. Program Dates In-Person (Residential): Friday, June 5 – Sunday, June 21, 2026 Online Engagement: Monday, June 22 – Friday, June 28, 2026 RAs are expected to begin training through the month of May

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a peer mentor and role model for incoming first-year students
  • Build meaningful relationships with participants and foster a strong sense of community
  • Support students in navigating academic expectations, time management, and college life
  • Provide culturally grounded guidance aligned with AASS values and mission
  • Live in assigned residence halls and ensure student safety and well-being
  • Enforce housing policies, program guidelines, and UNM Student Code of Conduct
  • Maintain visibility and availability during designated duty hours (including evenings and weekends)
  • Respond appropriately to student concerns, conflicts, or emergencies
  • Assist with workshops, academic sessions, and co-curricular programming
  • Support excursions, events, and community-building activities
  • Help create an engaging and structured environment that reflects the fast-paced nature of the program
  • Maintain consistent communication with assigned students during the online week
  • Assist with facilitating virtual check-ins, activities, and academic accountability
  • Encourage student participation in hybrid/online learning environments
  • Attend all required staff trainings and meetings
  • Communicate regularly with AASS staff regarding student progress and concerns
  • Complete incident reports and other documentation as needed
  • Collaborate with fellow RAs and program staff to ensure student success
